hI,
I am getting ratling noise underneath water pump and power steering reservoir when i put the gear in "D"....on moving gear to "P" sound vanishes.
Is this the problem with the power steering pump or belt needs to be adjusted????

Please help.

Hi there,

I have the same problem in my 1998 W210 E200 too, my machanic said it might be the tensioner. I really don't know!! can anyone give me some hints??

The belt tensioner is a common cause for rattles and squeaks, strange how changing the gear make the noise come or go.

The tensioner can be replaced quite easily.

well youre sudenly putting load on the engine when you put in d...common problem, not expensive to repair..

I had this noise too, it was the damper rather than the actual tensioner.

What do you mean by damper?? Where is this thing? Expensive to fix/change it?? Thks!

It's a telescopic damper, like a miniature shock absorber, fixed between the cylinder head and the tensioner pulley. I had mine replaced, along with a new polybelt, for a cost of £25 labour, £23 for the belt, and £24 for the damper, done by a specialist in Bristol. The belt was worn, and the damper was rattling, especially under load. If I wasn't busy as a musician, and hence having to take care of my hands, I would have done the job myself.

I agree, most likely to be a dampner.

Symptoms are a sort of diesel type rattling noise at tickover and low revs under load.

I had my Damper, tension pully and the belt changed today. the engine is just a bit quieter than before, the rattling noise comes back when I turn my steering in standing still and the gear is in D.

u should never turn ure steering standing still, a lot of stress on the pumps.. Maybe the belt has not been adjusted properly? Whats it like when cold??
