2013 C63 AMG
Hi guys

Just quick one really, I've noticed that sometimes on cold startup, for a split second I get a tinny rattle when my c63 first cranks? Sounds like the prop/flywheel? Doesn't do it every time?

Just me? The car has done 10,000 and is a 2013 model

Thanks

No sure if its just you , but I complete of a momentary clunk on start up that the dealer "could not hear" on my 2009 Alpina.

I hear a year later there was a known issue with looses flywheels/clutch assemblies.

I am sure that's what is was.

I would get it to an MB dealer and get their thoughts. At least if it fails later you can say it was look at previously.

My 2013 507 sometimes does this - probably about 40% of the time - a rattle from the front when starting from dead cold - sounds a bit lame tbh. I haven't mentioned it to the dealership yet, so it isn't bothering me too much.

Sounds like (pun intended) the camchain tensioner - a known fault on M276, M278 and M157 engines. See this post: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/172521-m157-m276-camchain-tensioner-heads-up.html

I have the same problem (we're far too fussy) but my dealer said there was nothing wrong when I reported it soon after buying the car in 2012. This didn't become a "known fault" until last year. I haven't bothered to get mine fixed yet and will wait until the next service to get it done at the same time.

Dropping my car next week to get this sorted at MB, will let you know how I get on, might need some luck but hoping it's a straightforward thing.

Had it on mine from almost new - 2012 model. Sold it recently with 25K on the clock and never had a problem. My dealer [Swindon] said 'they all do it'.
I think that using 5w40 oil has been shown to make a difference if I remember correctly. I know that on my last service they used it and told me it was what they now recommended.

Same here. Has never caused a problem and as it is only for a split second every so often on cold start, I have never been too bothered about it. It does sound pressure related, although I noticed it didn't do it this evening after not being started for over 24 hours. As long as no damage is being caused to the engine, I can live with it.

Had mine back today, finally! Should be all fixed now.

Took MB over a week to carry out this "Service enhancement" on my C204.

Let's see if it's gone for good now!

Mine is in this week for the A service and for them to check this.

Also they need to sort my dodgy drivers window motor which rattles aswell!

Good luck, hope it won't take them over a week to sort out.

Started mine this morning and no rattle so fingers crossed it stays that way.

My 2013 E63 is a M157 and it's booked to be fixed Monday week for three days.

First attempt, they didn't have the specialist tool, second attempt they realised that they needed a lot more parts that were in Germany after they printed off the 59 pages of instructions

So its booked for three days and they are giving me a car wile its being done :thumb:

what's yours in for sjmaxwell?

a rattle on start up?

Mines a Nov13 M157 and it does a fast sort of clicky metallic tick, tick, tick, tick for about 3 secs from cold.

It reminds me of the start up turbo wastegate rattle on my old 335i.

What do your garage think it is?

Check the link in Post 4, if your engine number on the V5 is in that group in the XENTRY document found on line then its possibly the chain tensioner problem

Ha! Was exactly the same case here.

They were annoyed by my constant calls asking for an update.

Similar experience with my car - which the dealer had for a week! Not sure if the instructions aren't as clear as they might be, or whether it's the fact it's an unusual job for the dealers to undertake :dk:

It was the need to replace some single-use magnesium bolts that wasn't picked up until the technician pulled mine apart that held up my car.

Mines much later than the engine numbers and dates listed.

But it still has the nasty rattle, only on a warm start thought after cooling for an hour or so.

They're coming to collect it on the 23rd, and to fix the failed offside heated mirror

My wild guess:

Aircon compressor on many engines makes a clicking noise as it is engaged on start up. It is totally normal on most cars, it's just the cam on the shaft that drives the compressor. But I am an accountant, not an engineer.
