Hi, I'm after some advice... my c220 cdi 2012 has developed a rattle on cold start up, I parked it up for 3 days started it up and no noise and haven't heard one for the last 2 days! I've been to 3 garages 2 of said engine needs to come out to replace guides and the 3rd said replacing tensioner and chain would be enough. I've got until the 19th as I'm within my 30 day period.

From reading on here a rattle on startup often indicates the chain with tensioner needs doing. I don't think it's necessarily an engine out job but have just bought the car? If so i would go back to where you got it from to see how it can be rectified. It's not something you want to leave i don't think. I'm sure there'll be someone along shortly more knowledgeable than me who can advise further! Ive got the same engine in 250 guise and after the air suspension it's the next think i'm always listening out for!

I've been quoted 600 for chain and water pump and other bits (dealer agreed to pay this).
Next garage told me they have to change guides aswell but cost would be £1780 the dealer not prepared to pay that so offered me a full refund but I love the car.

Have you got time for an RAC inspection before 30days is up?
I have until the 19th. Due to go back tomorrow but very reluctant to take it lol. First mercedes and I love it but I refuse to pay for it doing myself when I paid 6500 for it. I did offer 500 towards it but he was having none of it!

I think it might be the chain and tensioner you need. There are a couple of threads on here about it If you have a search (OM651 timing chain) Certainly seems £600-700 is the normal cost to rectify rather than £1800.

Only problem i have is the mileage I do per week. Would i be in the same situation 5-6 months down the line if its genuinely the guides that need doing. Nothing but stress for the last week 😒. tbh 99% of garages i do not trust at all! One told me chain was rattling at the back when the rattle is clearly at the front bad experience with every mechanic I've been too so very cautious with them and car dealers. (Not all bad but deffo the majority)

well if the rattle is at the front then its not the chain then as the chain is located at the rear which is why the engine has to come out to replace some of the guides.

Yes, good point! James it sounds like you need to get a Merc specialist to take a look. Maybe one of the companies on here, not sure who there is up your way.

My head is well and truly fried lol I've tried uploading a video but won't let me 🤯

Every time I take it too a garage the car has warmed up so no noise, so I was told the car would have to be stripped to find the problem. But as I said earlier I left it 3 days and for 2 days now I've heard nothing so surley if chain it would be there all the time?

I empathise, I’ve just been through a nightmare sorting the rear suspension out on my S212, trying to work out what the problem was. And that was with a well respected specialist. Best thing I think you can do is to get a known specialist take a look. In your favour you are not tied to the car if it turns out be something really major and there’s a chance the garage you bought it from will honour part of the cost of repair at least so you’re not in the worst position I would say.

He has said he will pay for the chain and water pump but not the guiders. His words was " I'd rather have it back and sort it myself and put it back up for the original price as I know its worth it" gutted tbf I offered 500 towards it but not having it!

I would think a chain would be heard on each cold start, so maybe it’s not the chain at all

Cant think what else a metallic slapping sound could be from the engine. I had same with my bmw with the n47 engine very similar sound after a while noise went but that rattled every time it was started from cold.

If the dealer has offered a full refund I'd take it.

There are hundreds of that model up for sale so finding one without a rattle shouldn't be difficult.

I've seen one a cat s (repaired) but 60k miles and a year newer for 6k. Really tempted.

Take a deep breath. Whatever is wrong with the car and whatever the dealer does to fix it, you will never be at ease. You'll always be listening for the next little noise. If the dealer is doing the right thing and offering you a full refund, take it now. Shake his hand and you can both leave with respect.
When buying a car, remember there are plenty more out there if you are prepared to take your time. It takes me longer to buy a car than a house.

please don't take this the wrong way james, but it sounds like you are on a tight budget,i don't really know what the insurance categories are but its obviously had a bump of some description,6k does sound really cheap for a year newer than what you have 2012 so 2013 mine is a 2012 and I paid 10k in feb ok with 46k on the clock and one owner but I waited until I found one I liked I saw some right dogs if you only have 6k why don't you see if you can find a really good older one that maybe has been really looked after with fsh etc i'm sure if you waited ( if you can) I don't know your circumstances but if you went for the cat s one you could end up with more problems and back to square 1,please don't think I am being rude but you will have to expect the odd big bill with Mercedes ownership even the independants can be expensive .

No offence taken, my budget was 7k and was really thinking to pay for the work myself but if im honest I don't trust the seller and the car 100% when I enquired about the car I asked i asked if chain had been done and he said the chain doesn't need doing on this model( which is a lie as I researched the engine on this model) I've bad luck when it comes to chains my previous car cost me 1100 to sort. I will keep looking and will take your advice on board and look to a older model. Thank you
