Anybody experienced the same problem.

During the last few weeks, I have noticed that there is a rattling noise from the engine/underneath of the car when decelerating to around 15-20mph. It only happens when you start the car from cold and in drive. It disappears after the engine is warm - say after 5 mins driving. It sounds like something is loose and like a metal plate vibrating. Can't see anything visually. Is this a dealer's job?

My car is 1998 E240 Elegance

All I could maybe think it might be is an exhaust heat shroud or something similar....

Not really sure without hearing it.....

Hi I have a similar problem with my CLK 320. Could it be the CAT ?

Did you find out what it was ??

I had the same on my E280 but on acceleration also, and it turned out to a loose baffle plate.

yeah, could be the cat, though a '98 is a youngish car for the cat to go.
My cat went on it's 14th birthday which was a pretty good innings.

At first I wasn't sure what it was, then the sound got louder, and then sounded exhaust related.

I had a loose exhaust shield too one of my previous other cars, which made more of a resonance than rattling noise.

The noise from my cat was audible at normal idle speeds (outside the car) my loose exhaust shield was only audible if revved.
