hi

My E300D failed the MOT emmisions smoke test. it was running 100% WVO at the time.

so, i've put it 50/50 WVO and Diesel now, given it an italian tune up.

What i could also do, is re-connect my disconnected EGR pipe. But if its been disconnected for about 40,000 (which it has), will it be OK to just reconnect it and then go straight for the MOT? or should i just leave it disconnected? or doesnt it matter?

advice would be appreciated.

You will obtain a lower smoke reading with the EGR not working.

Your car must be noticeably smoky to fail an MOT smoke test, suspect knackered injectors.

ah, OK, i'll make sure i leave EGR disconnected as it has been then in the past.

The car was on 100% waste veg oil, not a drop of diesel since april.....

i've mixed it up so its 50% veg, 50% diesel now so it should be a lot better. it only *just* failed the smoke test.

car is running best its ever done so i'd rather not mess with injectors.

I would be chucking a very, very strong dose of injector cleaner through the system as I suspect you have gumming injectors.

>>car is running best its ever done

If it's failing a smoke test, then, it isn't running very well at all.

Put her back on 100% diesel.....check your fuel filter, prefilter, tank pick up filter, banjo bolts, connectors etc....you'll be surprised what you will find.....and as Dieselman said....put a strong dose of injector cleaner through it. If your OM606 failed its smoke test.....it certainly ain't in top notch order....these engines run very lean and clean

last time i put in injector cleaner it reacted with the waste veg oil. never again.

i'll try 50/50 first and if its still an issue, i'll do a moly purge.

I assume that the car has a clean air filter, as this could also be a likely cause of the problem.

Do you put a short of Millers diesel additive in with the WVO.
A forum member runs a E300TD on WVO and had noisy running.
He used Millers and it cleared the problem.
The Millers seems compatible with WVO and may help.

I used irish product ( i think ) called Dipthane, and bardahly no smoke and mine is very smokey from turbo leak. Passed with really low emissions readings. Also i was told by some mechs to put 5 quid of petrol in with full tank of diesel and race up and don the motorway which i did not have to do. I guess dipthane is like millers. And 10-30 quid of stuff is a good bet to pass your test

I am sure it was Millers i tried before, but the car ran really badly for that tankfull.... once the tank was used up and refilled the car was fine again. it was almost stalling and hunting at idle with the millers in it.

the best product like this i have used is Moly Purge. You run the car from a bottle of the stuff until it uses it all up, then reconnect the fuel lines back to the fuel tank.

however, with about 50/50 diesel/veg in it, it has now passed the MOT no problems!

i'll have to remember next year not to be running 100% waste veg when i put it in for the MOT and visit the tax station 1st.

once i picked up the car from the MOT station, it back back to my own personal filling station (ie my shed) to top up with WVO. no point in running too strong a mix of DINO.

:bannana:

Probably because it was cleaning the injectors up.

I would be checking for gummed injectors and piston ring blow-by.

Best to take it to the MOT when it has had a good run and clear out with plenty of revs. MIne has always gone straight through the emissions test every year. Had new injectors at 180k miles - that did make a difference to running and fuel economy.

Add 100ml of malt vinegar to every 5litres of fuel.

Wont help smoke problem but car now smells of mushy peas instead of fish'n chips. :p

sorry...couldn't resist it. :ban:
