Hi there
Last year my pully wheel dropped off my Bosch alternator on an E300. I have since changed the car for an an E320CDI and there appears to be a tinny rattling that has just started(after I had the CPS changed). I am concerned that it is the pully wheel again, but a quick search reveals it is a water cooled one on the E320 and not the same, does it have a pully that is turned by the main belt? I had a look for the alternator but can't even find it!
Any help would as always be gratefully received.
Many thanks

The alternator does have a pulley and it can be replaced. Remove the belt first and check all the bearings that are turned by the belt. It may not be the alternator pulley causing this noise, there is also the water pump idlers etc.

The alternator pully is a free wheeling one and needs a special tool to remove it.

Hi there
Is it a known problem with the watercooled alternator? I read several accounts of pully wheels dropping off on the Bosch one(on my E300).
Many thanks

I have seen them drop off on the water cooled alternator. Not common though.

It is not actually water cooled. The coolant that runs around the alternator actually helps the engine to warm up faster not for cooling.

Many thanks

alternetor

so if the alternator does not need to be watercooled can you blank the water supply off and fit a normal alternator much cheaper
