Hi all
Now that the cold weather is here my gearbox doesn't appear to like it!How do I check the fluid?I have a good look around the engine bay so I presume it is done from underneath?
The box appears to work well from cold-it just makes a strange noise. It feels as though the box is struggling to disengage when there is no depression of the accelerator,or when it is stationary and particularly in reverse there is a vibration as well. This sympton is most noticeable if I go around a right hand bend(ie the front left tyre is under load)and if I go over a speed bump as the front wheels bump over the other side.
The car has quite a high mileage(206K)with FMBSH to 169K but independant after that(and a few bodges as well).
I suspect this fault was why the car was P/X'd.
So long as it doesn't get any worse I will leave it as it is(I would like to change the gearbox fluid though). The symptons disappear when the car is hot after 5-6 miles. It does groan a bit around 40mph as well.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Regards Rob

First thing you need to do is get the fluid level checked since it sounds as if it may be too low. Mercedes gave up supplying cars with a dipstick so you need to get someone ( specialist or main dealer to check the fluid level) pronto. They may do it for free if you hint they will get to change/top up the fluid if its low.;)

Dipsticks on e-bay easy to check just make sure its the correct one for your gearbox got mine from the usa on e bay for £20 worth having and you can sell it afterwards car gone.
