Can't you just accept that it will lose files and overwrite.?

Its not giving me that option. It just says that i have to restart my computer and boot from the CD but when i do this it just goes through the same routine of telling me it cant install it:mad: I have tried it 4 times now and the same thing happens every time!!!!!!!!!!

1) is it a restore cd you are using,if so there should be a option to restore to original manufactories settings

2) if normal xp cd,then when it displays hard disk and partions, select partion and select option to remove partion

this will involve deleting everything and starting again but you will need a valid serial key before donig this!

When your loading through it should give you the option to do a clean install or similar when it detects an existing version.

Then choose the partition and delete it , recreate it and install windows onto it formatting it with ntfs

I have the product key and its a genuine copy.

However, i did buy it from ebay and the disc says its for hp workstations(which my PC isnt) and that its only for use with restore CD(which i dont have:crazy: )

When i first loaded it i had no problems at all and registered it with microsoft no problem.

Its just not giving me any options, just sais it cant install it as my current system is newer etc:mad:

Silly question. When it tells me to resart my computer and reboot the cd to install it(losing all my current files etc) do i just put the cd in and open it up??? Is that what it means when it says boot from the CD????

Because it is for use with a restore disk it doesn't have an autorun file so isn't booting from the disk.

First make sure the CD drawaer is set as primary boot option in the BIOS and that it's bootable.
If that doesn't work explore the disk to see if theres an appropriate EXE file.

Failing that have you got an older Windows disk. Install that then reinstall XP.

Any Fdisk or format option available on the appropriate drive..

Your current problem is your system on your PC is more up-to-date than your install CD (Windows checks the dates on the core files on the PC - if they post date the CD you must be doing something wrong (After all who would want to downgrade a Microsoft installation:rolleyes: ??!) so it prevents you doing it.

There are a variety of fixes depending on what you want to do and how your current system was installed.

I'm assuming from the thread that you don't want to try repairing your current installation and just want to wipe the computer completely and start again.

If the computer arrived preinstalled with Windows XP and a reinstallation disk you should use this and your computer will be restored to its "out of the box" state requiring updating to SP2 2007. The restore disk will take care of the system activation and serial numbers.

If you upgraded to XP from an earlier version of Windows you will need to have the previous system's install disk and the upgrade installation CD key handy when you reinstall.

If you want to reinstall over your current installation you will need either an SP2 install disk for your version of XP (you can "borrow" one of these) or to create an updated installation disk by combining your original install disk and SP2.

You can completely remove all data from your computer and reinstall using your installation CD. You need to erase the drive first so the version conflict no longer exists. This is usually straightforward but occasionally there are problems with activation codes on the case not matching the disk you have been given  and you may need to go back to your supplier for advice as Microsoft do not support OEM reinstallations.

Make sure you know the CD Key used for your system before you remove it. Download a utility like Belarc Advisor (free) to collect this information from your registry.

Also download drivers for your hardware in advance - particularly if you have a SATA hard drive.

If you know the manufacturer and model of your hard drive you can download a manufacturer tool to prepare your drive for reinstallation.

This site can take you through the various installations.

Fdisk and format the drive, as:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q255867/

Install from the CD you used before (with Product key)

Take a note of all your hardware then visit each site to download the latest drivers, run Windows update, transfer your files accross from the external drive, run through the BIOS to optimise settings and you're away.
