Do you think that telling us the car model and engine type might help? 🤔

What mileage are you on ?
If it’s the E diesel on your signature , you can see the chain through the oil cap and how much the tensioner is out .

Like i said its not a major rattle it only lasts for a couple of seconds then disappears.and it only happens now and again, but only seems to be doing it on cold starts.once driven shes quiet and doesnt do it again the rest of the day

Ive been looking and apparently it can happen in colder weather due to the lack of oil pressure?

Maybe post a link to a video on here to let others advise on the noise?
Do you know the service history of the car? If in any doubt I would start with an oil and filter change using correct spec oil and decent filter on the basis that it is cheap, easy and does no harm. If that does not sort it then I would get a specialist's opinion on whether it is chain related - would be surprised on a 109k mile om642 though.

Ok will do thanks smiley, like i said it only happens first on cold starts but not all the time.i intially thought could it be down to the lack of oil pressure with the weather being that tad colder in the mornings.

But ill do an oil and filter change and go from there. It has had new oil cooler gaskets done as they were leaking and were the old type so im wondering if they used the correct oil when it was done.as i know the garage did an oil and filter change too

When you do an oil change on the om642 , put half the new oil through the oil filter housing and half through the normal oil filler cap .

Why is this?
I heard it years ago from an MB specialist, I think it is because the other side of the engine (oil filter side ) is very briefly starved of oil when it starts before the oil pump gets the oil everywhere.

Ok be fine doing it this way will it? As on my other cars ive owned ive always put it in the oil filler cap...

Would you know the correct spec oil for these engines.also is it 8ltres fill capacity?

Mike.

Look on eBay for Mercedes Newcastle. They sell service kits at a good price which include 10 litres of the correct oil and a Mercedes oil filter

The engine takes around 8 to 8.5 litres of oil with a filter change

Perfect thanks buddy

I had this with an M104.
I changed to Petronas, from an unbranded (but correct spec) oil problem went away.

Any 229.51 Oil , yep the MB kits are pretty good .
It is around 8L I always have to check each time . I normally buy 20L barrel’s when they are on sale .
