I was hoping to be able to see what engines do what in terms of MPG whilst i look for my new used MB, real world on a combined cycle, both petrol and diesel, but specifically (for me!) the new W211 E class engines. I know there are various posts with this mentioned, but was hoping for an easy read which i hope will be of interest to lots of people aswell. Please be honest and please state whether its urban, combined or m-way, many many thanks, :)

Hi Gregster,
I was just going to start a similar thread, so now I won't. I'm looking for a W210 estate and I've been reading some info MB sent me about fuel economy. It looks like a photocopy from a sales brochure and it relates to cars from 22/11/99, so I think that must be the face lifted versions.

Anyway comparing the E280 and E320 (petrol) there is a big difference in what is printed and I wondered if anybody could verify these figures in the real world.
E280 E320
city 18.8 18.3
extra urban 38.2 25.8
combined 27.7 26.7

I have to admit to being quite baffled about how the city figures can be so similar and the extra urban figures can be so different, whilst overall the combined is still very similar.

that must be a typo for the E320 extra urban, it must be 35 not 25? Maybe their photocopy they gave you is wrong?

can anyone give me their experience on the E220cdi versus E270cdi?

When I bought my W211 they had a W211 brochure that was inconsistent on lots of the technical specs. The engine bore/strokes didn't work out properly for some engines, while a few acceleration and fuel economy figures looked decidedly suspect.

It is definitely a misprint.

All MB's I have had (that's A, B, C,E, ML and S) will do the combined figure on a run or better. The S class has a combined figure of 35mpg and we regularly beat that on a long run (up to 37 mpg at indicated 70-80 cruising speed). The ML had a combined figure of 30 mpg and we could beat that on a run -just.

The A 180cdi auto had a combined figure around 50.3 IIRC and we could just beat that on a long run in UK and could get 54 mpg in France with less traffic.

My E220cdi estate has a combined figure of 38.6 and we get over 40mpg on a run cruising around 70mph.

Round town is getting harder and harder to give any meaning to, as it all turns on how bad the jams are. Round here it is pretty good and we get over 30 mpg.

Cant speak for the 211 220 cdi , but my 210 200 k is reading 29.4 since its last reset . The after start reads 17 when started in the morn , and will rise to about 28 29 throught out the day . This is on A roads , B roads . On a 160 mile run last year I drove down and got 31.5 , that was with cruse control on and doing around 95 . My wife drove home with out cruse control at around 105 and managed 34.6 .We allways have the AC running also

211 220cdi will crack 50mpg on a run.

Will average low 40's or high 30's on my commute to work (helensburgh to clydebank with some stop start)

@ high speeds the car will still do about 37mpg (read shorties last para, mine will do 37mpg being driven like that).

sounds like the one for me, thanks. you are getting more mpg than my astra van!!

I would of taught that the 220 cdi would get better mpg than 37 at high speeds on a long run

Some pics of mine in action

Driving like a nun but does include a drive accross Edinburgh

High speed driving (not saying whether in the UK or not but involved regular speeds of 120mph+ and crusing at 90- 100mph). There's a 20min break contained in this

Taking it easy (70mph cruise from home to Banbury) with 2 15mins breaks

very good thanks. i feel like a 17 year old again, every picture of a W211 makes me want one even more, even a picture of the dash!

My w211 is getting 28mpg for the last 2000 miles which has been around town miles rather than long motorway runs.

My CLK 320 (90% town driving) gives me an average reading of 25mpg.

My C200 Kompressor W203 gave an average of 31mpg.

Not a lot though. I reckoned that the diff is not substancial for me to consider a diesel as I don't do big mileage. Prolly could save me a couple hundred quids a year of so !

going to see a good looking W211 E270 cdi tomorrow - has anyone got one and can confirm mpg for different driving? many thanks,

W211 e240

Combined driving from hastings to wales 3 up boot full, including moterway at fast lane speeds using cruise gave me 30.5 today

Thats pretty impressive for the e240. Now i have had my e320cdi for a while i average about 28mpg town driving and anywhere between 35mpg and 45mpg on the motorway, although i havn't done any very long m-way journeys yet.

Seems to me all the big petrol engines will give decent mpg on any sort of run, best ive had is 31.5 average 22 to work and back, but i think for real world decent economy you have got to have the diesel.

Dont forget power wise the newer diesels are smaller capacity and have more power than mine:doh: and shedloads more torque.
