Thought id let you all know what a nightmare i had with my rear brakes over the last few days.

looked at pluggers howto on the rear brake install, seemed straight forward enough, not as easy when your rear brakes havent been touched for 6 years, at the same time thought id paint the calipers and rear hub.

started on the passenger side. at the start everything seemed to go as planned, pins came out ok, spring came out ok, pressed pads back, seemed a little stiff, but went back ok, took caliper off, then came the disk....jammed on solid.. ... whacked and whacked it, turning it after every hit, stil no joy, after about 30 mins hitting, it, i soaked the hub where it joined the disc(looked rusty), and the bolt holes in a penetrating spray and left it over night, next day, first whack, came off.. lovely, new disc cleaned and on without a prob.. had to hammer the pads out as they were stuck solid in the caliper, but the piston went back ok, caliper was pretty rusty, so i got a drill with wire brush end and gave it a good seeing to, came up ok. Got my new greestuff pads, greased ready to go in.... problem, they wouldnt go in. in the end had to file the side until they fitted (abt a mm of each pad). regreased, thorough clean, and all put back together, although the stealer had given me the wrong bolts for the caliper, so i reused the old ones for the time being.

next came the drivers side, pins out, 1 side pad went back ok, other was jammed, took caliper off, hammerred pads out again as they were stuck, wd40`d the piston, left it whilst i changed the disc(in hindsight i shouldnt have changed the disk), piston on caliper wouldnt budge.tried loadsa things.... in the end, i took the new disc off in fear of warping it, oput the old one back on, bolted the caliper on with 1 old pad on the working piston, then pumped the brake to try and free the old piston up, luckily it did the trick, piston freed up. i could see the rust which had jammed it, also the rubber around the piston had been messed up by the numpty who probably changed the pads last time.

it seemed by the condition of the discs, the rear brakes havent been working properly in the 6 years that i have had THE car, and this hasnt been, picked up during its FMBSH, nor by my mechanic who looks after the car, i guess, the padss always look good, so it was assumed they were ok. discs were rusty where they hadnt been making contact, and every brake pads was a different thickness, as they werent moving freely within the caliper.

in the end all done! the only thing is, is the lack of a rubber seal on the caliper going to cause a problem, and can you get these seperately?

i know the fronts work ok, so i will attempt these over the next few weeks and take pics for a howto, as thee doesnt seem to be one.

Also like to thank pluggers for his howto as it was very helpfull, and does show how a perfect instll (without probs) should be done.
