Hi All,

I am taking my W203 saloon ('51 plate) to have a rear bush replaced, the one nearest the wheel on the lower suspension arm.

I am using a reputable mechanic that I have used for servicing and stuff like this before.

Can anybody suggest how much I should end up paying for this job to be done (supply and fit).

Many thanks

If he gets the bush from Mercedes, it is about £40. Motor factors will supply one for about £10 - £15.

If your mechanic has the right tool, it can easily be done in place, half hour labour at the most.

Without the right tool, it is a nightmare - take that from someone who did it the hard way!

Apparantly its the bush on the rear outer/lower, the one integral to the hub carrier.

Can this bush be changed without changing the hub carrier or does the whole assembly need changing?

This bush?

Yes, that's the one.

If it's OK to remove the bush are you able to source a new one without the hub carrier?

post No 2 above said it all really.

you might well be better off with a specialist Merc Indie that has that special tool. Or even the main dealer.

It a 15 minute job with the tool.

how long without the tool I don't know - but the poster with the picture may know.

2-3 hours with a DYI tool. 25cm threaded piece of 12mm bar and 42,36,32 and 21mm sockets. Depending on whether the bushing is inserted with the flange behind the ball or not (impossible to know) it will separate and the outer ring will have to be heated with a welder to extract easily.
Murphy says it will separate most of the time ;-)

Cheers Gents,

I have enough to make an informed decision, I'll keep you all posted.

2-3 hours!! Never.

The official labour time is 0.9hrs and that is what should be charged.

Read again. 2-3 hours without the tool. Which by the way is not for sale to other than approved garages.

I have the tool and I am not an approved garage. You can buy the tool from Klann.

All sorted, new rear lower arm and bush and two new front lower arms.

It's like driving a new car....a lot of cash but money well spent.....
