Do not do as much motorway driving these days, but was on the M5/M4/M25 yesterday and with the rain I was amazed how many drivers had their rear fog lights on,are they just plain stupid,it has been illegal since rocks was soft but at least 7% of the cars on my way home yesterday had them on:wallbash:

I've noticed that most of the cars that have this fault (including front foglights) are Volvo's and BMW's. ;)

To be honest, I'm more concerned with dimwits, driving without any lights at all in heavy rain, during pretty abysmal daylight this time of the year.

I'm with the original poster. If rear fog light make it harder to see the brake lights and judge distance then they are creating a hazard an not alleviating one. I don't know why the people that use them when they shouldn't can't see that they are causing a problem as you only have to follow another vehicle with them on to figure it out. It's not rocket science, if you can clearly see the normal rear lights of the car in front then it's not yet time for using fog lights. Some people put fog lights on at the first hint of fog or they follow the example of other road user. Either way they are not thinking for themselves. Safety is about visibility but using the maximum possible lumens is not always the way to achieve it.

Agree with zipdip and 190. One of my bugbears. Sorry 12ts, but rear foglights should only be used in fog. Heavy rain causes a halo effect making visibility worse. Even in fog it's arguable whether you need them on if you are in a motorway procession. Save them for A and B roads when nothing is following close.

I never want anything following close!
