I was driving out of a multi-storey car park using all my skills to manoeuvre it when suddently the left side (rear passenger) wheel hit the kerb (it was a very narrow turn). I managed to drive out of the car park and then further 70-80 miles back home and then did a quick inspection to find this (see pics please). As I am new to Merc I am not sure if this is something serious or if it is ok to carry on driving as normal? :( Had it been my previous car (an old Honda Civic) I would not have cared for such a small crack but not sure about Merc! Any help would be highly appreciated

I'd say get it changed. It could blowout at any time as the sidewall will be very weak now it's split.

I would play it safe and replace the tire. The last thing that you would want is a flat while you're driving which is an inconvenience at best and a replacement cracked wheel if you don't catch it right away.

Doesn't look that bad to me, if it's not very deep I wouldn't worry about it. But the question is if you feel comfortable driving on it.

To be honest I think these tyres are really made of glass, I may have hit the kerb few times with my Honda back in days but never had a crack like this..maybe the weight of the car or the alloy wheel played a part?

Do I need to get it done from a Merc specialist or any tyre shop (like Kwikfit) will be OK? I think they will need to do car wheel balancing as well isn't it? how much would it roughly cost for that size? :(

Get it checked. Ideally at a MOT Garage, not a tyre place... less likely they will just try to sell a new tyre.

I certainly wouldn't be comfortable driving on it - there are only 4 little bits of rubber keeping the car in a straight line and away from trees, walls etc...

Get it changed. It's a low profile tyre and there is no much rubber on it's sides so there is a lot of pressure on relatively small surface. ~ £200 per tyre + fitting and balancing.

£200 per tyre? In what world would a tyre for those alloys be £200

Oh dear.

You sure about £200? I just did a quick search and some cheap ones are under £70 and the one I have it at the moment (Hankook) is £140 ? Maybe I am missing something? it is a 255/35ZR18 94Y tyre.

My mistake. I saw 235/35/18

Quick question, is it important to keep my rear tyres of same brand? as I am only changing one tyre and they are both Hankook so shoould I go for a Hankook or any tyre of those paramters 255/35ZR18 94Y should be OK?

^ This.

You need to prise open the cut to see how deep it is. If the carcass cords are visible then it definitely needs replacing; otherwise I'd be inclined to just keep an eye on it. However, if you're planning on an extended Autobahn run at VMAX then I'd change it.

Normal advice is same brand and model on each side of the same axle.

I'm not sure why being new to Merc makes any difference whatsoever in this situation?:dk: Do you think that if you drove say a BMW it could be unsafe, but safe on an MB?

NO..it is unsafe.
