hi i have an ML270CDI (02) plate and my rear springs are broken. Having just purchased some OE manufactured ones from a company my mechanic is having issues compressing them to fit the car. He's tried some local garages and a MB specialist who dont have this equipment. I'm advised that the springs are generally as one unit compressed with shocks attached. Does anyone know of a company (near Warrington, Cheshire) that can compress and fit without the need to purchase from MB or without shocks, Any help much appreciated. Craig

You tried MB Tech in Warrington?- not sure if they have the equipment, but am sure they will have the know how.

My local dealer told me that they only supply and fit as a single spring/damper unit - pricey too. I have read on the Super Interweb Highway that it's possible to separate and replace the spring though. I can't help on who and how though sadly.

Here is a very useful resource on ML suspension+links via the late lamented whnet site. I would suggest that once you have all the bits you look towards commercial vehicle /offroad specialists who are used to handling these heavy duty suspension units for a rebuild.

Evidently the spring coils are too close together for conventional spring compressors so you need a large external rig to do it. Here's a PDF on rear strut removal.

We have a floor mounted spring compressor at work.. im sure its made by sealey.. this is what we use for this job.

Incidentally where did your mechanic get the springs from? We used to get them locally but the supplier can no longer get them.

How do you know if the springs are broken? Anything to notice when driving?

^ In an ML I guess you feel closer to the tarmac :)

A front one on my Dads E320Cdi estate broke and it looked like a drag car the front was 'that' low.

Springs supplied by.....................Yours Truly !!

You wont get a rattle, more like a twanging over bumps... more often than not you wont hear anything.
