Hi all, I’m changing the rear springs and had a quote from a local mb specialist. Does anyone know if this is a common problem on the 63?

Fit rear springs = £141.12,
With experience we have found the bolts retaining the rear arms seize into
the bushes & have to be cut out,
then the bushes in the axle beam need replacing .
To replace rear bushes, bolts & fit springs = £238.44

Depends on mileage and which 'bushings' they are talking about . The rear springs can be dropped out by undoing the bottom shock bolt , using a trolley jack under the inner (nearest the diff) end of the 'swinging arm/axle beam' knocking the bolt out and lowering the jack.

The problem comes (sometimes) with knocking the bolt through. Mechanical wisdom would say (depending on age and mileage) to replace both the elastomer bushing in the arm and the pivot bushing in the hub end while you are at it as they are not expensive. Both can be a complete pain to remove and very time consuming , you would expect an MB specialist to have the correct tools for the job and a hoist/4 poster making it much easier to do . Having done the job DIY myself on the driveway I would say unless you have the kit, time and skills... pay the man his £250.

I say that because you can not really hit them out easily with the arm still attached to the car you might have to batter the inner part out and then thread a hacksaw blade through an cut a relief slot in the outer metal part and then heat it up and get real medieval on it's a$$ ...or it could just drift out without a problem....

You could but a cheap extraction tool of Flea bay . I would not recommend this as the threads will stretch and seize and the thrust bearings on the tool will shatter...ask me how I know 🤔.

I would say he is quoting for worst case scenario (which is good) ..but the bolts might just breeze out and he saves himself an hours or so's labour and you still get the job done . :thumb:

Wouldn’t it be just as easy to just replace the arms that hold the springs in place? £134 for a pair from mb, and I’d imagine that they would come with new bushes.
Car is 2009, and just done 89k

last time I looked the bushings at each end are separate part numbers to the arms as are the nuts and bolts that go through them so each will have its own price . If indeed you can get the arm with the elastomer bush already fitted from MB for £134/pair go for it :thumb: . I doubt he pivot bush nearest he road wheel would be included as that is part of the hub.
