Rear sub frame replacement

Guys, I am going to pick up my wifes 2009 C Class after a service and yes they told me the sub frame is corroding. If there any way of getting this done free by Mercedes? Its done 65,000 ffs Anyone challenged this and got it done?

As per this thread, clearly many have had subframes replaced free by MB.

Have you asked MB regarding replacement?

As for mileage is it is 13 years old, milage has little to do with it.

You didn't say if the service was carried-out by an MB dealer or by an independent specialist.

Either way, you'll need to take the car to an MB dealer and start the process from there.

Note that your claim isn't based on the MB 30 years anti-perforation warranty (which only applies if the car has been serviced and inspected by an MB dealer every year), but on the fact that the corroding rear subframe is a known issue resulting from a manufacturing defect.

Well, what a surprise, went to MB to pick up the car, on Monday they are going start the process with MB Benz themselves and they are going to replace the sub frame for nothing. They said it was a sub standard frame they used and that they have done quite a few. Good one MB :)

As said , many people in this thread and similar on the Forum have had free replacement of the subfrane. Unsure why it is such a surprise?

I had the driver and passenger airbags replaced FOC last Monday and it was recorded in the health check video they sent me that there was slight corrosion on the sub frame either side of the rear diff.
I think I'll pay them a visit and see where I stand regarding a replacement sub frame.

On your facelift W212 E63?

On my health check during airbag recall, they just checked tyres and brakes…

Just not used to main dealers being nice to be honest, great of MB to do it as I said to the lady in the dealership :)

Having the rear subframe replaced by MB free of charge should come as no surprise . My guess is that they are crapping themselves that this does not become a worldwide safety recall and they are just getting the numbers down in an attempt to keep a lid on it.

It took a flying sunroof in the USA , just the one, and they recalled three quarters of a million cars for a safety check (including my 16 year old C class) Not sure how many have been replace , costly but much easier than replacing rear subframes.

I wonder how many affected vehicles will simply be scrapped by their owners, when their "local garage" or MOT tester reports back to them that the subframe is failing & that they do not believe it can be welded satisfactorily.?

^^^^ This happened . My friend has a garage and employs 2 MOT testers ( He can also do tests) . He told a lady her W204 C class subframe was toast , she scrapped it then and there . This happened before we all started to get wind that the rot was setting in on many of these cars. Since then he has instructed his guys to look much closer at any W204 C classes that come in for MOT.

Most W204 failures are beyond weld repair from what I have seen on here. A new frame is relatively cheap , if you are going to drop it to weld it you may as well replace it.

No Ed. Sadly I sold the E63 in September. Not being used enough.
Now using a S204 C180k until I get myself a W213 E63s when the time is right.

Maybe MB Poole are more thorough?
They appear to check alloys for cracking, tyres, brake discs and pads, oil leaks, body damage, exhaust system and subframe corrosion then text me the reprt on video.

Just took my 11 yr old C Class to my local Merc dealer for airbag replacement, both drivers and passengers, after the safety call back. Turns out the rear sub frame needs replacing and Merc will do it for no charge! I asked is this a safety issue and was told no. I have to drive tomorrow but I'm certainly not going far in the next few weeks. Anybody know what's going on?
Just got my 10 year old W204 back from Mercedes this morning, took in in for a safety bag recall and after inspection they found the rear subframe was corroded. First they tried to charge me "3 grand" but when I told them to stick it they offered it for free. Some people may not know that Mercedes has a 30 year warranty for corrosion, I certainly wasn't aware until after the fact.

The 30 year corrosion warranty is almost certainly not being applied here. It refers to panels corroding from the inside to the outer skin.

It is notoriously difficult to get MB to carry out work under this "warranty" especially if the vehicle has had any repairs and non factory paint or has missed any annual inspections.

MB are also being selective regarding which vehicles they are replacing subfranes on free of charge.

I am glad your persistence paid off 👍👍

Hello and welcome . Just search this forum and you will se all you need to know about this issue. As said, the 30 year anti corrosion does not apply to the subframe but MB are sitting on a ticking time bomb with these rotting subframes and are quietly fixing (often on quite old cars 2007...) them when pushed.

In the US MB has just extended the factory warranty on subframes to 20yrs.

So why are some claims accepted and others rejected?
That is in the US.

But in the UK I think the criteria is there must be a hole, not just corrosion.
