has anyone ever replaced all four rear subframe mountings on a w124 and if so is it a pig of a job or just an afternoons work genuine merc bits 4x mountings new bolts and large washers 121.00 with vat i am going to attempt this job on saturday

You will find it easier if you remove the diff, the extra weight it carries makes all the difference. The bolts that hold them in place are b******s. Plenty of release agent and soak them over night. ALWAYS use a 6 sided socket as the multi point sockets will round off the nuts. Have someone there with you, even if it is only to pass you spanners and tea. Be safe not sorry.

I would sound a note of caution here. This can turn out to be a difficult job even for an experienced mechanic. It will be physically demanding and for someone doing it for the first time I predict will take longer than an afternoon more like a weekend! If you remove the diff as Ian recommends remember you will have to disconnect the prop shaft and half shafts as well. It all adds time to the job. Good tools, a couple of friends with some "muscle" and lots of jacking equipment/ axle stands etc are all prerequisites for a job like this . Best left to experts like Ian IMHO. Sorry.

update i did the job in 4 hours i lowered each side at a time i did not have to take the subframe out after getting the bushes out i cleaned up the places where they go into the subframe and greased them them jacked the subframe back up at that side forcing the bushes in to their housings then to the other side and more of the same easier than i thought everybody said you have to take the subframe out not true

Hi Mark

Why did you change them? Was the car thumping going over bumps? My 210 estate thumps going over bumps kinda like a parcel shelf rattling and wondered if it was subframe mounts have exhauated most other things.

Glad you got it completed.

I had them replaced on my W210 and it stopped the thumping when going over pot holes.

Really i have had this torturous thumping when the car is lightly loaded sounds like something rattling around in the boot, even removed the luggage cover tried putting rubbers under seat backs etc but it is still there. Totally gone when car is loaded.
Does this all sound familiar??

I never really loaded the car up with stuff so don;t know if this would have stopped it.

When ever I went over a pot hole I would get a load thump. This has not happened since having them changed.

I just dug out the invoice and they replaced the front lower wishbone repair kits and the rear subframe front mounting bushes so it may have been either that cured the problem.

The cost of the parts was £44.20 each for the wishbone repair kits and £45 each for the rear subframe front bushes. So a total of £178.4 for the parts plus the fitting so not a cheap option.

Before having this done I had the front anti roll bar bushes replaced, these are quite cheap and can apparently cause similair noise so the garage replaced them first.

Peter

You were getting the thump from the rear ok prior to this? It is my front subframe bushings that look suspect, have already done front drop links and wishbones.

Yes the thump sounded like it was coming from the back prior to having the rear sub frame front bushes replaced.

Edit: The car seems to pull to the left much less since having them done to. It still does it slightly though

Peter.

Nice one.

Mark I am glad you found the job so easy after my dire predictions.:o A couple of questions. 1. Are you a fairly experienced car DIY man- Mechanic /engineer ? 2. did you need/ wish for help from anyone? 3. did it require a lot of physical strength? I'm just interested from the point of view of others who may wish to attempt the same job.;)

I Served My Time As A Mechanic From School Worked As A Mechanic For 10 Years For The Last 6 Years I Have Been A Taxi Driver But I Have Ended Up Fixing A Lot Of Taxis In York I Could Probably Do With A Workshop As Most Of The Taxis In York Are Merc Diesels And The Local Mercedes Dealer Has Just Put Their Labour Rate Up To 101.00 Pounds Per Hour You Can Do The Job On Your Own But Need The Car Fairly High Up On Axle Stands And I Had To Use 3 Jacks To Put The Subframe Back In On My Own Bearing In Mind I Did Not Take The Axle Or The Driveshafts Off At All I Also Took The Handbrake Cables Off From Underneath The Car So As Not To Have To Dismantle The Rar Shoes Etc

The Reason I Did The Rear Subframe Bushes In The First Place Was Because I Had Already Done All The Rear Trailing Arms And The Hub Carrier Bushes And The Car Still Felt Vague On The Rear Almost Like It Was Rear Steering All The Tracking On The Rear Was Checked And Found To Be Perfect So This Was The Only Thing Left
