After a couple of miles in my car my brakes squeal really bad! I've had them greased up as whoever had the car previously had put them in dry, but its made no difference.
When the lad was greasing them he told me they where cheap euro car parts pads, pagid?

I'm going to presume this is why they squeal now so looking into new pads, what do people use/recommend?

I've read a lot of good things about Akebono pads lately.

Pads discs

Lee i have had quite a few discs and pads in the past in one car or another . In 30 cars over the time of 50 years. I use Mintex for both . As they have been making these items for a long long time. Never had a problem. They are after all like so many parts , as long as they are made to specs, and of good materials. Some say merc and nothing else , but its up to you.Pay arm and a leg for Merc or try a cheaper brake parts ond see. This is just my twopence on the post. And not saying you have to do it. I have purchased items from Mercedes last week, the item was made in Spain in a Mercedes box ,the item was Bosch .This i could have purchased from internet at 1/2 the cost. This is just one item,i have others the same. With Merc on the box and another item in there, not Mercedes.

Pagid shouldn't necessarily be cheap and cheerful and many people swear by their pads.

That said I experimented with non OEM pads once when I tried EBC high performance pads and they were absolutely dreadful managing approx 4000 miles admittedly half of which was hard driving on a trip.

The advice given to me was stick with OEM and I have to say I agree. The trick as the poster above says is to find out who makes the OEM pads and source them elsewhere if cost is the problem.

Hello mate I've just recently changed my pads to pagid and my car squeaks a lot, so my advice is stay away from pagid for your car and stick to originals. I will be changing mine again in January. :)

Lee, I would go to the stealers and buy the OEM part. Am saying this, as when I shopped around last year for rear discs and pads, I found that they weren't as expensive as I thought. Paid £200 all in, £150 for discs and £50 for the pads.

Thanks for all the replies!
I have used minutes previously years ago and never had problems with them. Might price them up and check with merc to see how much they want. It's starting to do my head in now! Was in some traffic yesterday and had everyone staring at me like my car was broke!

Just purchased a set of minex pads, found them for £35 for the front axle. Messages him to see how many pads it was and his reply was if it says front axle it'll be enough to fit them to the front axle. I'm not expecting all 8 pads but we'll see!

I changed discs and pads earlier in the year on My E55 - thought I'd save a few quid and put Pagid pads in - same experience - so bad, I got them out and replaced with OE pads in the front within a week. Sent the Pagids back saying they weren't fit for purpose - the sqealing was appalling - and got a refund.

I know the feeling mate, I can't wait to get them changed. Mb at Dartford have quoted me £627 inc vat so that's not bad for disc and pads all round.

Pagid should be just fine, a perfectly good brand and better than most. Had them on my old Subaru in preference to EBC red stuff, might be worth whipping the pads our and just touch grinding the leading edge of the pad.

Changed my standard pads for EBC red stuff pads. Difference is like night and day compared to standard ones. Minimal brake dust, no noise and very reassuring bite. Used them for years never had issues with wear on them. Much better upgrade over standard but you can't go wrong with mintex either.

Well noted, I have to say I found the EBC Red Stuff underwhelming on a Subaru even with the matching discs. Having said that, they seem to work better on some cars more than others.

Are we suggesting that Redstuff are one of, if not the best pads out there? My OE pads are about 70% worn and looking at best options right now. Particularly on a C200 Cdi Wagon if anyone has any recommendations.

I think EBC went through a period of when they changed the compound but mine are just the pads mated to standard Merc discs as they are very cheap on the C55. Seems a good combo over the standard setup but as you say brakes are odd they work well on some cars and not on others!

I take it that's supply only Suky? Are the front discs and pads way more expensive than the rear? Reason I ask, is I paid £200 for rear discs and pads from MB Teesside inc VAT. So at your quote it would leave £427 for the fronts, which is more than twice the price as the rears :dk:

Apologies for the thread hi jack Lee!

I've used Pagid's on other cars and found them to be very effective, but yes you do get some squeal. Best way to silence them is work them hard. Once they're bedded in they generally quieten down in my experience

I've tried using them hard but the more I use them/harder I use them the louder and more often they squeal! They might just be dodgy pads or something, but every set of pagid pads has squealed for me

hello Abb yes that's supply only, bearing in mind that the front discs are much bigger than the rear discs so hence the price difference.
