Recommend a decent socket set?

That Halfords set for £80 is a serious bargain and you should get it before the price goes back up. The only thing you'll likely need at some point is a few hefty 1/2 breaker bars.

In the last 12 months I've spent way too much money on Wera, Wiha, NWS, Gedore, Hazet and Stahlwille tools and yet my very old £25 3/8 halfords socket set (not even from the professional range) still soldiers on and does most jobs just fine.

The major plus for the halford tools is the walk in warranty. I bought some locking extenstions and the locking mech on one of them broke. There was no fuss, just a straight replacement and I didn't even have the receipt. Even on a Sunday. Far easier than getting a warranty exchange from you're local snap on van.

Like my Teng Tools me sen, but they aint cheap!

Socket Sets

Halfords Gear is probably best bang for ya buck!

If you're getting the Halfords set, the following voucher codes will reduce the price by £15 total, making it £64.99.

Guys, thank-you so much for all your input! I have purchased the Halfords set today with the voucher code kindly supplied by some of you here! I am well chuffed!

Quality seems great - more than enough for a novice like myself...

My father in law lives in Eastern Europe ans has a very old Iseki tractor - i am not sure if the bits on there are imperial or metric but now i know i got all bases covered for £65!

Thanks again all - this forum is awesome i am so glad for all your help thus far.

I do have a Lidl torque wrench which for occasional DIY-er use is pretty good. Comes with a three year guarentee and cost about £15 IIRC.

Laddo is building up his tool kit. It was recommended to him to buy things like socket sets from the Halfords Pro range - as he wears things out / breaks them this'll tell him where he should invest in highest quality tools.

Luckily he will also inherit his granddad's Snap-On Collection, which I'm sure he's got his eye on at the mo :-)

See post 34 !

Just picked mine up today, £71.99 (10% off with code - thanks, plus 3% quidco hopefully). There was a pile of them in the reserved area, but mine wasn't there and the firl had to get it from the back. She asked 'are these on offer or something?' to which I smiled and said yes reduced from £200. She looked shocked as did the guy behind me and she said 'you think I should know this rather than asking you, seeing as I work here!' I said nothing and walked out with a grin on my face :D

Looks like a good, robust kit. Thanks to those who pointed it out and the codes :thumb:

Hehe, nice one Bob - it does indeed seem a lovely quality set :)

Just wanted to express my sincere thanks to all that posted with info and discount codes for these Halfords sets, I just picked up a 170 piece set for the bargain price of £112.50, this will cover my merc and my motorcycle all in one handy box. Much appreciated for the info!!

Even more incredible than the offer price is the fact that these offers a continuous - they swap and change the kits from time to time, but there are always some kits on offer.

The funny thing about the Lidl set, which looks really good btw, is that there are countless companies that white label the same set with their own brands and sell it for far more.

Here's the same set with the Laser brand from Amazon

Laser 3671 Socket Set 1/2"d & 1/4"d 94pc: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

Or if club card points are important, here it is with an Am Tech brtand at Tesco

Buy Am-tech 94Pc 1/2" & 1/4" Dr. Socket Set I0640 from our Hand Tools range - Tesco.com

Maybe you prefer a red case? here it is with a Neilsen brand

Neilsen 94pc Socket set 1/4 - 1/2"dr ***FREE P&P*** on eBay!

If you're worried about brand names, buy the same set with the Goodyear logo on it

GOOD YEAR 94PC SOCKET SET - Better Bargains

Or if you want to throw money away, buy exactly the same set from Machine Mart for £125.94 !!!!

Laser 3671 94 Piece Socket Set - Machine Mart

Google 94pc socket set for hundreds of other options in just about any colour box you can think of. Maplin used to sell the same set in a pink box for £99.99

I just had a look at that lidl set and I can't really be sure from the pic, but it doesn't appear to contain Torx sockets, which you may need if you have a modern merc.

Perhaps one of you that have that lidl set would be kind enough to confirm that one way or the other for the benefit of those that are considering buying one?

Just ordered the 150 piece set for free home delivery but nowhere in checkout page to put the voucher code. Rang the helpdesk and was told code REVIEW50K was for Saturday only and he used A13CM03 for the 10% off.
