My good friend for over fifty years , who was a very successful accountant , but doesn`t know the difference between a spark plug and a coil has been supplying me his "cast off " cars since the late 80`s.
First off was his Escort xr3 , which I bought from him for my wife in 1988 . When we went to collect it ,there on his driveway was a brand new 190E , with F reg plates . It was a couple of days before the 1st of August and had been delivered by the local Merc dealer. He was itching to try it out , so we changed the F prefix to an E ( courtesy of some black insulation tape) ,and went for a spin.
In 1999 I went with him to the Porsche dealer in Bristol to collect his new 2.5 Boxster at what to me was a mind boggling £43k. Off we went to a pub , pulled up in the car park , and the heavens opened up . That was the first of only a handful of times the Boxster has ever seen rain.
In 2006 he gave me the 190E and bought a 1998 C240 . A couple of years ago he retired , and gave me the C240 . He decided to make a bit more use of the Boxster , but only on fine days . Now spending a lot of time overseas he feels it is time to get a little runaround , and will order one for september . The Boxster "will have to go mate , I can`t afford to give it away , but you can have first refusal" . After due consideration (well, about 2 minutes) , I decided to accept his generous price , and now look forward to his fourth "cast - off" . Current mileage is under 29,000 , regular servicing , always garaged , and valeted every few months. I will be 66 in july , mad or what?

I think you should talk him into buying a nice little AMG of some description (as a run around of course) and in a few years time, who knows……..? ;):D

I did suggest he buy a new A class , but he says whatever he gets will have to last him 20 years . Think I will probably be gone by then!

Hmm, slight predicament now. As the guvnor has pointed out , my "workshop/man cave " in the back garden is the only place we could have a second garage . Our link-detached bungalow has a garage joined to the neighbours garage on one side , and the driveway on the other side is not wide enough to build another one , leaving potential for only a canopy. The 450sl is always garaged, and the Boxster has only seen the rain on 3 or 4 occasions. The 450 is hardly ever used , but I have loved owning it for the past 8 or 9 years . I am sure the Boxster will get far more use (still only as a second/third car since I have a company car and an old C240 ) . At almost 66 years old I still work 4 days a week , but must admit find it harder to tinker with cars these days. The SL is in good , but not excellent order , and the Boxster is in mint condition and arguably more "practical" with better mpg, aircon, electric hood etc. So do I stick with "classic Merc " or 25 year younger Porsche?

Next year, when you will reach the official retirement age of 67, you will get a letter form HMRC detailing a 6-digit sum owed. It would then turn-out that your 'generous' accountant was in fact laundering money through an elaborate scheme that involved off-loading expensive cars to unsuspecting third parties.

Reached retirement age on 2/7/17 Markjay. Not been self employed since 1996. Mrs May pays me enough to stay home on fridays !

HMRC did write to me last week , advising that I owed them £78.62 for "underpayment on company car benefit" . My mate had a lot of run ins with them over the years and was largely unimpressed by their mostly inadequate knowledge of taxation!

Keep them all.
If the driveway on the other side is wide enough for a car but not a garage you could have a Cantilever Carport fitted eliminating the need for support posts at ground level. Brilliant but simple. I have one.
