As of 2021, it has a new rear subframe, a new alternator, a new battery, a new sam unit and well the brakes have been repaired....so what else is there, to go kaput!! he h e

See last comment. Could be an old clonker worth nothing, or a pristine motor that impresses all who see it.

A grand a year on maintenance?

Or £15k , out of your investments to be slapped on the table to buy a four year old that will lose £2k a year in depreciation? Call it £3,500 a year …

OK , so is it an late W203 or early W204 with a new subframe ?? . Keep it , drive it . Keep an eye on the hand (foot) brake shoes and associated parts, especially the all important 'dust' shields - unless they were done when the subframe was replaced - , along with the solid rear brake pipes that should also have been replaced at the same time.

Keep up with general maintenance. Does it have a history of the transmission being serviced in the last 5 years 30/40K miles ?

You asked if it was a reasonable price to pay.
Parts prices to you were 144 plus 351 plus VAT = £594
I looked up to see roughly what the parts would have COST them - not what they charged you.
Total COST of the parts was between £200-250 to them. Deduct that from £822 and that is what they really charged you for a couple of hours work.
Whether that is reasonable or not or whether you could have got it done cheaper or paid more, who knows.
It is done now so not much point wondering about it.

We have to remember that garages are businesses. Not charities.
Rent, rates, gas, electric, wages,tax.
Those plug in computers cost a lot to update each year.
Times are difficult and people need to survive!
£800 is a weeks pay to lots of people these days! Certainly not a fortune!
Think of it as a years travel pass, £15 a week!
