I noticed today that the red tab ( It says on it "Mr Workshop Only" ) has broken away from the black cap. Can it cause any damage?Do I need to replace the whole cap or can I just purchase the tab?
BTW, now this tab is off,how do I remove the cap altogether as I want to check the fluid level anyway?

Thanks

does your car have the dipstick? if not then you need someone with a dipstick to check it for you... any independent... or you can buy one from the dealer..

They are £26 from the stealer, and not all dealers will sell them, I think as jay says get it checked as they know what they are looking at.

the caps seal cost pence

I was in the same situation as you regarding this when I first go my MB. It was on this forum that members told me to "pull hard" on the cap to remove it. It will come off.

I would say that a non MB garage has been at your transmision oil for one reason or another if the red bit is missing, as an MB tech would have fitted a new red tab ??

This would make me suspicious and would make me want to change my fluid, in the event that a non MB mechanic had added non MB spec ATF.

As mentioned above, no point in removing this unless you have the dipstick.

For C class 203.

Cap P/N: 1402700091 £1.06.

Red Pin P/N: 1409910055 £0.34

Mine hasn't had the red lock tab since the cooler pipes were disconnected for paint-work by an MB dealer when 2 years old.

It's had the fluid changed twice more since.

Just have the level checked.

Thanks again all.No suspicions about history of car as I have all service docs including receipts and invoices. It has done 59k , looked after by MB Grimsby.I now take it to Mercserve in Nottingham. He has just done front brakes (discs and pads) ,fitted two new bulbs and holders and inspected it complete with test drive:Cost £204.I think the tab was partially broken anyway. It might have broken off when I was cleaning the engine bay in truth...

Just because the tab is broken it means nothing, I know loads of people who have broken them just be being curious. As the dip stics are now twice the length needed we cant leave them in the car now

FYI I went 2 days ago to the dealer to check the autobox oil level: they broke in front of my eyes the red tab, checked the oil (was OK!) and than delivery me the car without the red tab!

I've asked! They replyed me it's OK!

You have to break it to remove the cap.

They should Always replace the tab.

From new the tab is black.

It was red probably since I've done a full ATF oil and filter change before buy the car as used, 20000km ago, now the oil is still clear:)

May I live without the tab? Hoping so:confused:
