alright,

One of the cats on my W202 C230k is disintergrating and as i run LPG emmissions is not an issue - I was thinking about just unbolting the back of the cat as smashing the fook out of it and hoovering out the remnants. I did it before many years ago to an old escort and it really was a P.O.P and ran sweet afterwards but are merc cats made of stronger stuff ? anything else i need to know ??? I know the particles are pretty nasty ?? Is there a post cat lamda or anything (my old vectra had one !) I take it I will need to do it to both cats to keep the gasses flowing smoothly !

Any thoughts ??

Cheers

Brett

No issue with the Lambda as there's only one which is before the cats. I think you would be far, far better off cutting the cats out completely getting a couple of pipse welded in, won't cost much either.

Unfortunately you "need" a cat for the mot - doesnt matter if the innards are not in it though so long as it passes the emissions which mine will

Had mine done at ollys.

Drop the cats , cut open , remove innards , weld back up.

Make sure the welds face the underside of the car , so those sneaky testers are none the wiser. ;)

Good point. I must have got lucky before as I did a delete on my old 300E and passed!

We used to do this with the v6 and v8 engines. Then realised that they can just be broken up and rattled out. I still cannot see how the 112 and 113 engines can fail even with the secondaries removed completely. If you look at the readout from the emissions machine it pretty much makes no difference!

Terry is there any benefit to this on a 320?

Tony.

I really don't think so myself. Never noticed and difference in power when knocking them out. We only do it to save the punter £££'s on replacing them when they break away. I cannot see you can get any more power removing them.

Yeah but...
The only way to get the 320 to sound sweet is to custom the exhaust. Olly or Acid are your men for this Tony!!!!!
And it will sound lovely

No i will wait............
I will talk the wife in to a 55AMG if it kills me!..............then the mods begin!
Acid will get sick of the sight of me.......i hope............
Gotta go the wife's looking.

Tony.

Mine doesn't seem any more powerful to be honest.

I had it done because it sounded like a skeleton having a w@nk in a dustbin , as the innards had broken up.

We put it on the exhaust gas analyser afterwards , it'll go through an mot no probs.

Do they actually need to be cut open ? I was just hoping to a, bash with hammer or b, poke in the hole with something long and thin !!!!!

Trouble is , if you don't get every last bit out and some of the ceramic bits and bobs get ingested back into the engine , that could be bad.

Ok thanks, Angle grinder at the ready once i manage to get the rusty bolts off - gggrrr

Looks like im going to have to angle grind the bottom ones and dremmel the poxy top ones !

Fnarrrr !

Howard you are correct the tops had to come off !
