Removal of locking wheel nuts

Hi,

My W124 has locking wheel nuts on three wheels and the key wasn't given to me when I bought the car.

They have an internal groove around the inside, does anyone have tips on removal?

I've seen a set of wheel nut removers at Halfords and wonder if anyone has tried them?

If original fitment then I'm told any MB dealer will have a Master Key.

Buy a new set of locking bolts and then see if you can scam a free swap out.

Have a service with them and then it'll defo be free!

Any decent local garage snap on do a locking nut remover tool takes about 10 seconds a nut :thumb:
 
Hello, thats some fix to be in, I know 'cos I'm in the same fix, and with a 124 220ce as well. I have no suggestions apart from purchasing a new set of nuts and having a friendly garage remove the old ones. Could say that's what I did, and yes it will be what I will do, one day. I KNOW, sooner the better, what if either of us get a flat?

Absolutely, locking wheel nuts might add 30 seconds to the time it takes a serious thief to steel the wheels I guess lockers are a good deterant to the opportunist or novice thief though
 
theres a snap-on tool that is universal fitment for locking wheel nuts,try a local garage they should be able to help?

No Matter how quick a thief can do it, They'll still make an awful lot of noise with a lump hammer tw@@ting the damn things on.

It's a relatively straightforward job DIY with the removal sockets, or as previously said, a slightly smaller impact socket (not as easy). But most garages or tyre places will do it for £5ish per wheel

Lets face it, if you're driving the car into the garage it's most likely your own. I doubt somebody would go to the trouble of stealing a car, then driving it down to quick fit to get the wheels off :dk:
 
I just lost my nut key and had to get mine off.

Popped into Mercedes and he said 'We have around 160 of the 250 keys available, we have to go through until we find the one that fits yours and then we can order you one."

I went to Halfords and bought there removal nut.
Problem was the nut had a collar on it so it didn't fit deep enough into the hole to bite the locking nut. I was OK as I had a lathe and took the collar off, but something to bare in mind if going that route.
 
Well I suppose in theory the garage should ask for some form of identity before whisking off the locking nuts.......though I say 'in theory'

Yes - but if you drive in with the car then ownership is irrelevant as you have the keys in your hand

I lost my locking key this week. Panicked as you can imagine.

I went to Mercedes in Croydon and they removed them for nothing. They told me there are 60 different 'keys', 30 up to 2004 and another 30 after that.

I replaced the locking bolts with ordinary ones.

A replacemnt locking key is about £30.
 
Just as a slight aside aren't locking wheel nuts a bit last century? Do people still come back to their car to find it on bricks with the wheels missing? Unless you have uber expensive alloys I can't see it happening really as so many cars these days have alloys as standard... not like in the 70s and 80s when they were a relative luxury and a must have accessory!

Probably stolen now for the tyres.
 
Might have insurance implications if the locking nuts were factory fit....leading to a higher premium if you tell them or potential rejected claim if you don't.
