I can get my fingers to wobble them, but I can't seem to get any purchase, Anybody know any magic to get them out?

If it's anything like a C class you need long nosed pliers to get purchase on the bulb holder.

Turn them 90 degrees and pull, it's all in the manual.

As KH says, twist and pull is the secret.
Don't know how different yours is under the bonnet but on mine the driver's side one is fairly easy but on the passenger you should undo the screw holding the coolant tank, pull up sharply to free it and then you can move it out of the way with all the pipes still attached.
