Removing Dashboard Binnicle on 190e

Season's Greetings to all. I need to connect a wire at the rear of the binnicle for dashboard illumination. Have tried it but only comes out an inch or so before it hits the steering column. As this is non adjustable (1990 2.5 16v) has anyone any ideas. Any help much appreciated.

Disconnect the speedo cable (big serrated round nut in the centre) & wiggle the binnacle out. Don't pull it too far or you'll stretch the cable & have 'needle bounce' forever more.

The alternative to wiggling is to remove the steering wheel, which requires a long 10mm hexagonal socket, but you still need to undo the speedo nut (& unplug everything else).
