Mrs PXW had someone run into the back of her mini clubman a few weeks ago. All very amicable, company car hitting her when she was stationary, full liability admitted, photos taken, no-one hurt, let's get the insurers to organise a repair and all move on with our lives.

The total damage, after assessment, was a new back bumper spoiler (about £85), plus a new rear numberplate, and repairing/refilling a sharp dent in the painted plastic bumper about the size of a fingernail. No collect/drop off costs - the car was perfectly driveable, so we dleivered it and collected it (only about 2 miles from home). No injuries, despite the inevitable phone calls asking about our whiplash. Not even a hire car during the period of repair, as we decided we could cope.

Anyone want to have a guess at the final bill?

£500 including food for the paintshop cat:rolleyes:

Tricky is closest - it was £1350. I was quite shocked - I would have been unimpressed with Romeo4's £500, but that would at least have felt like the right ball park.

No wonder insurance premiums are high, wonder what bill would have been if paying privately?

Could they have put body on frame jig to check for twisting or unseen damage, rear end shunts can write a car of if body is distorted too much.

I based 500 on parts and painting of bumper plus labour for dismantling and reassembly but I am way out of touch with most prices, or so my wife tells me.

Yes, we wondered the same re the price for doing it privately. It's amazing that such a small repair can get so expensive - and imagine if we had four or five days of car hire as well (they had it over a weekend). When you consider how common a small bump is and this sort of cost, then it must be a major part of why premiums are so much. But our insurer commissioned the work, and would presumably just recover from the the other insurer, so they would have had no interest in challenging the bill. I would have put up with the damage rather than shell that out of my own pocket. No mention anywhere on the bill of work about putting it on a jig, so I don't think that would have been part of it. It was just remove the bumper, fill and repaint, refit, new spoiler and new plate. That's it.

All in the labour costs I guess - say they book 8 hours in total (stripping down, prep, painting, polishing, valet after etc)

I guess £120 an hour x 8 hours - plus the VAT

£85 for the part plus the usual paint and materials/sundries etc.

£1350 does seem a lot but I’m honestly not surprised either - they must make pretty good money from the insurance jobs.

You can see why so many cars are written off these days.

I was quoted around that price to tidy up 4 wheel arches.
This was the extent of the rust so did it myself.
