Replacement Key Fob Reprogramme/Recode?

Hi, I've read several threads that state that a replacement key fob can be reprogrammed by following specific key-press sequences, but they all differ. So I'm hoping for a definitive answer plus sequence (if possible) ... I have a 2005 SL350 (R230) with Keyless-Go

I purchased a Chrome Key Fob to replace my original all-black Plastic Key Fob (see picture) because I really prefer the bling and quality of the chrome - it looks so much better than black plastic. Equally, I was advised that this replacement was compatible with an SL. However, I have 2 issues:

1. The Chrome Key does not turn in the Ignition.
2. The reprogramming instructions I chose to use do not work.

As the key does not turn in the Ignition, does this indicate that the key fob is incompatible with my Ignition Switch, or is it the fact that the key is not programmed to my vehicle, which is causing the issue?

Is there a specific reprogramming sequence that I need to follow, which will resolve both issues?

Grateful for a definitive way forward and/or resolution - it would be great to be able to use a chrome key fob with my special vehicle, thanks.

Is the reprogramming not in the handbook ?

BTW> that looks like the wrong casing.

eBay no doubt.
If you purchased from the dealer then you would know the answers already...

Raise a case against the seller straight away and get yourself a refund.

Don't think you can do it with STAR.

BUT... myself and dozens, if not hundreds of other Merc owners would love to be proven wrong.

Circa £230 for a three button fob (pre programmed) from the dealers. No idea of cost for a keyless go one.

Its only the case he needs.

Putting the board in the wrong case ........................ it will never work !!

Where are these threads which told you this utter nonsense?

Star can teach a blank key in to the car if the key is supplied from the dealer. Getting a blank key to take away from the dealer is virtually impossible though. They must do the coding of the blank key in house.

It will have 4 digits after the part number when you order a key from the dealer. A blank will have 9999 and I think the pre-coded ones have 0000 from memory.

E.G A212 766 7306 9999 is blank, ready for coding.
A212 766 7306 0000 is pre coded to a car.

This facility is available for those who have changed a complete ecu/eis/key set from another donor vehicle but cannot provide the V5 from the old car to order the correct spare key. Most parts counter advisers may not know about this option but prompt them to delve a little further into their EPC and they will confirm that i'm correct.

Replacement keys complete with manual key cost around 229 from MB, but you can get your keys sorted by this Company Mercedes key specialists- Need new Mercedes keys? Replacementmercedeskeys.co.uk

There is no secret sequence to program the key and STAR cannot do it.
Thanks, I still do not have a resolution where seller has refused a refund. Nevertheless, I did contact the Company in your link, but no response. Might be because I am in the middle of Wiltshire that it's too far away from anybody ... equally dissapointing that they did not even respond to say 'sorry, no'.
In the interim, my 'new' Chrome Key sits in a basket waiting for a brighter day.

What did you pay for the key? I might be interested in it.

Hi Wolfgang,

I'm on holiday at the moment, but have taken time out to reply personally..

A simple answer to your question is -

No, the key you have purchased cannot be used again.

The only place you will get a keyless go key for your car is a Mercedes dealer.

We can program a standard working key - IE Put in ignition and open/lock using buttons no problem but the keyless system is an unreliable system that can cause me a lot of problems so on an SL I stay away.

I have also replied to your email, dated 25/08/2015 with the above information.

Many Thanks

Incorrect.

STAR can guide you through the learn in process but not actually "code" the key.

9999 is ready for learning, As in - The dash will display, Computing Data please wait. Status of key is 05 FB when read via IR tester
0000 is pre coded - It will work the locking/Turn ignition - Status of key is 15 EB when read with IR tester

If the key was completely blank, it would display a status of 21 DF when read with IR tester, which you can get by mistake from Mercedes as MBS in Southampton will agree when they order 2 keys which came incorrectly..

Correct, Star cannot code a key to the system. There are many systems for sale on the internet for coding and re-coding keys. Most requires the CPU on the ignition lock to be de-soldered from its PCB and its memory dump read via a programmer. The memory dump is then decrypted in order to extract the keys and hashcodes already preprogrammed into the ignition at the factory.

In order to calculate and generate a new binary for the new key, an existing key will be required to extract a passcode from the key. MB's security team has wisely designed the system such that a hacker will need to access the ignition lock AND have a working key inorder to complete a successful hack.

Simon Touch seems to be the only supplier that makes a dummy infra key that will extract a memory dump of the ignition lock without resolving to de-soldering the CUP from the circuit board.

Personally I wouldn't want to save just £100 if I had to allow someone to de-solder the CPU from my ignition module - not to mention that once this has been done that person will have the codes to all 10 keys that were pre-programmed at the factory.

You have bought the wrong chrome style key anyway, with the correct chrome key, i can swap your ic from your old key, search this forum for chrome key chip/ic swap.

Oh yeah really? Have you tried swapping chips 0028772/0032094 from a Keyless key to a chrome key laterly?

Wongl -
Simon touch is mickey mouse in the world of keys. A re-seller that re-brands other tools.

Also, There are 8 Tracks for keys 0-7, You can have 3 keys per number. So potentially 24 keys, but only 8 can work at one time (IE - Key no.1, Version 1 - Program Key no.1 version 2 and version 1 will stop working.)
