Replacing Key Blade

I may have made a big mistake here, but when I bought my ML270 the previous owner couldn't find the spare key. Seeing how much the dealers charge for such a device I bought a three-button fob from eBay which came with a spare, blank blade.

My thought is to get the blade cut to be the same as my original key (there is firm in Birshops Stortford who do this!) and then either re-program the fob myself (if this is possible) or get a dealer to do that part for me.

My question is .... how the devil do I get the thing apart to swap the blades over?

The picture is of the actual fob (which is exactly like my original one). The whole lot cost me forty quid so it seemed like it was maybe a good bet.

Have I wasted my money? Is it possible? How do I change the blade?

Thanks in advance (as always)

Dave

Sorry you have wasted your money, the key can only come from the dealer programed.

MB and BMW are the only car where the keys cannot be copied

You will have to go to the dealer with the log book and some ID plus £150

Some key blades can be purchased on their own

Thanks guys. I will put it back on eBay then and let someone else buy the fob and blade! Just as a matter of interest how DO you get the fob apart to swap the blade? Alos, why do I see so many blades being advertised on eBay and elsewhere if they are of no use without a dealer?

Thanks again both. I wish I had found this forum BEFORE I bought the car ... I would probably have made some VERY different decisions!

The only way to get the fob apart is to cut it open.

On the flip out key circa 1999 those blades can be replaced on their own, the details are in the car handbooks that have that type of key.

Thanks
I thought they were riveted through..

To replace flip out key.

press the button
fold out the key 80 degrees from the recess
press out the pin in the key with a 1.5mm punch.
remove the key

reinstall in the reverse order

I have just had a very similar experience. The ML came with one key which I promply decided to snap the blade in two in the ignition. The replacement blade can be ordered as a part number at £10.78 plus VAT and a whole fob is £100 plus VAT and programming (dependant on dealer charge). I now have a whole new key plus replacement blade. It takes about a week from a main dealer.
