I've read on these forums about an AUXILLARY input to the comand unit....? I've checked my glovebox, no holes or sockets etc so I probably don't have one! Is this something that can be fitted fairly cheaply?

Yeah, I can't remember how much the cable is but it's only a few quid, you'd have to make a hole in the glovebox or wherever you intend to store the mp3 player. There are lots of aux threads in the electronics section, one was kicking about earlier: http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=13070 Good luck
