Hi everyone, my 2014 (facelift) E class had a run in with a BAD valet service and instead of spraying the cloth he sprayed the glass on the center display forcing fluid behind the clear plastic. He hasn't got insurance to cover new cluster (£1400 fitted).
So I was wondering if it is possible to buy a 2nd hand cluster on Ebay and get it programmed with all my car data? Main dealer ofcourse says no so anywhere else I could try?

The lack of insurance is not your problem.

Can the cluster be removed and the plastic cover removed and cleaned?

If not then they caused substantial damage through incompetence. Take them to court if they will not pay. A secondhand cluster almost certainly cannot be (legally) programmed to work and if it could who would pay for this?

Thanks DSM10000,
He has offered to pay for the reprogramming as I think I'm gonna be banging my head off a brick wall until I go through the legal process sadly. I know I'm clutching at straws trying to get this sorted without having to pay to go through the courts

It is not expensive to start a claim and you would be almost certain of winning:

Make a court claim for money

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear about this problem. Would it not be possible to dismantle the cluster and clean the plastic window?

For £1400 it has to be worth looking into (no pun intended), and you’ve not much to lose if you’re otherwise going to be replacing it?

As per post 2...................... ;)

Welcome to the forum. Contact Comand Online, they're forum sponsors and if it can be done they'll know how.
Thanks Stratman, I'll look them up

Hi Will,
I've been told by main dealer as well as a 3rd party Mercedes specialist that the unit is sealed and has tamper proof circuitry (which I'm dubious of)

Has anyone been able to open a cluster that anyone knows of? Would be the perfect solution

Keep us posted how you get on, could be useful to others...

I will do. Going to give Command Online a bell tomorrow and take things from there. They might be able to tell me if the cluster can infact be dismantled and will save me a whole lot of leg work. Just need to get my trim tools out!

UPDATE...
Just had a great conversation with a guy from "cluster repairs" who says that it's an easy job to open the cluster and clean from the inside. They certainly are NOT sealed so watch this space!
Gonna take it apart at the weekend so fingers crossed

I often ponder how many of these "detailers" have any, let alone adequate, levels of insurance...

Clusters that I have had dealings with have had a tamper evident seal across the joints, this is simply to show it's been opened and would void the warranty (on a new cluster) but means nothing on secondhand units
