Resetting electronic keys - does this work?

Apparently, if your remote key fails to work and replacing the batteries has no effect the following procedure resets it:


  1. Place key in ignition.
  2. Press and hold the "Lock" button for five seconds.
  3. Press the "unlock" button five times in succession.
Has anyone tried this? Does it work? Would it only work for a key programmed for that car or is this a way of programming a key (which would be an obvious security flaw)?

I don,t believe this procedure works for the electronic key, but if it did lets hope everyone is honest that reads this thread!!!
 
The piece i read about this specifically said it worked for electronic keys with "Lock, Unlock" and "Boot Open" switches. The author said it had worked on his 1999 W202

This is to reset the key for your own car, not just any key...

That was my assumption, the security loophole would be several miles wide otherwise...
