After 14 years’ ownership, my W169’s battery failed today - which had to be replaced by the RAC when they came to my rescue.

After the new Varta battery had been installed, my exterior mirrors subsequently failed to automatically fold on locking the doors. Despite checking the appropriate settings in the system menu to fold mirrors on locking the car it hasn’t resolved the problem. Even after then resetting everything to factory settings, and then double-checking that the requisite settings were engaged it still made no difference.

Suggestions welcomed on rectifying this issue.

I had and still have the exact same issue on my S211 E63 when I replaced for a new battery.

My folding mirror folds when I press the internal button on the door card but it no longer remembers to auto fold with the keyfob.

My gut feeling the module or instrument cluster needs to be reflashed with STAR?

Do we have any mbclubbers here who have STAR that could confirm?

I had this happen to me just the other day in my 2010 S212, after briefly disconnecting the battery. In my case the automatic folding came back eventually after trying various combinations of manually folding the mirrors with the internal button, locking, unlocking, manually unfolding, locking, unlocking etc. I don't remember the exact sequence unfortunately. I may even have toggled the auto-folding setting in amongst all those combinations. Sorry I can't be more specific, but don't give up hope!

Does your one touch window open/close work on the drivers door switches?
After yesterday’s issues; today, first thing, the external mirrors still refused to fold closed on locking the vehicle.

Then, prompted by your response, I tried folding the mirrors from the inside door controls. This worked without issue, and as expected.

This appears to have been the hitherto undocumented method to effectively ‘prime’ the mirrors to automatically fold on locking the vehicle via the key fob.

How very, very odd. It all works now as expected. Maybe, this ‘simple’ solution will help others in similar circumstances.

Thanks to everyone that offered a possible solution to this problem.

Having repaired quite a few broken wires in mirror housing....Mercs included, one of the first things I do when I get a car is disable the auto folding mirrors!!!
