Over the last couple of weeks I've down the auctions looking for vehicles for some of my Leasing Customers and I always keep an eye out for the older Mercs to see what prices they are making.
2 cars have recently caught the eye and the prices paid were quite surprising and show that prices for good, well specified, full service history W124 Estates and CE Coupe's are on the up...big time!...both cars were purchased by Traders.
The other car was OK but could not be considered an A1 car, but the price it made was still strong for what it was.
1) First car and one that went through the ring today. 1995 220CE, Almandine Metallic with tan leather interior. 55,000 miles, 2 Owners and 10 stamps in the history. Car also came with Air-Con (working) and the interior was mint...no wear on drivers side seat bolster. Extending seatbelt arms working etc etc.
In terms of the bodywork the car looked excellent, however, the front offside wheel arch had surface rust all around the wheelarch, which had spread to the wing edges and both bumpers had scuffs......so to get the car looking fantastic, about £800 would need to be spent on the car.
Bidding, would normally start off at £800 for a CE and then maybe finish off at £2000-2300......this one started off at £4000 and the guy who opened the bid thought that that would kill the bidding there and then....but no, bidding finally stopped at £4,950!!!!! and then you have to factor in the paintwork, service and the glowing ABS light.
2) 1993 280TE....great spec, air-con, mint condition, 7 seater, full MB history, 100,000 miles.....price £3000
3) 1994 320CE......149,000 miles, Signal Red (never liked the CE in Post Office Red), tan leather, stupid alloys, oily engine, 5 Owners, Good bodywork...not a spot of rust, but some fading to the red paint, needed an MOT soon and again a glowing ABS light.....£2250
It would appear that with lower mileage TE's and CE's becoming harder to find that prices are being driven up, and its also clear that there's demand for these cars otherwise Traders would never pay this type of money at auction.....I can understand this very well, as to my mind, the W124 was the last truly well built mass production Merc's....the R129 also falls into the well built bracket, but then again it was never prodcued in massive numbers and some will also say that the W140 S Class also falls into the bank vault build quality bracket, but its hardly a main stream family car, unless your pockets are very deep.
PS: NO BMW of this era makes anywhere near the price that older Merc's make...
