Retrofit COMAND to W164

Hello everybody,

I hope you aren't all getting sick and tired of COMAND questions, I did have a little search around the forum and on the 'net but couldn't find any conclusive answers so here goes...

I'm looking at getting a W164 with just the standard radio (model 20 I think it's called) and was wondering what I would need to buy to get COMAND satnav and an SD card or USB socket for MP3s. I've seen different COMAND head units being advertised on various web sites and on eBay but they are different part numbers, what should I order for the best integration and features?

Also, I haven't seen the SD card socket in the ads which seems to come with the factory fitted COMAND in any ads, is that an optional accessory?

Finally, would the satnav instructions keep being displayed on the instrument cluster while for instance a passenger was changing radio stations or browsed MP3 files?

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

Yes, I've had already had a good look around there and to be honest I got more confused than before I started... The part numbers are listed (up to 2004 at least) but it doesn't say what features you get or don't get with each one. For instance some COMAND units for the ML have an extra set of soft keys right on the screen's edge and others don't. And the mystery about the SD card slot remains... Also, some of the parts listed on the various sites say they are not for use with MY2009 cars so there must be some extra differences here to take into account.

For instance, this unit has the soft keys but no SD card slot:

Whereas this one has an SD slot but no soft keys:

So the hunt goes on...

The one with the SD-card slot must be the new NTG2.5 device. A completely different device, more like the one on W221 and 204. I'm not familiar with a 164 and cannot comment if retrofitting NTG2.5 is more difficult, at least it should not be similar to retrofitting NTG2.5 to a W211 with the old Comand.

Wow, cool. That's another wealth of information to digest

I've found these part numbers for the COMAND for the W164:

• A164 820 09 79
  
• A164 820 22 79
• A164 820 26 79 (2.5)
  
• A164 870 33 89
• A164 870 32 89

Pretty sure 26 79 is a 2.5 with HDD and SD slot but not sure what the other ones are. I think most are non-HDD based 2.x.
