Can anyone help with information on retrofitting a tachometer to my 1987 W124 300D? - this is the first car I have had without one and I hate the big clock where the tachometer should be.

You will need a crank sensor and an amplifier board and obviously the tachometer.

DM, where does the amplifier board live? Wonder if that's the source of intermittent tachos on the late W124 diesels

Nick Froome

Not actually seen it, but believe it to be in the fusebox near the diagnostic socket.

I have heard that cracked solder joints do cause intermittent tacho and one fix is to apply some pressure with cars inserted under the cover.

Is it in the kickdown relay I wonder?

Nick Froome

Possible, because on the 320 petrol the tacho signal is definitely via the kickdown relay.

Thanks Dieselman - I have the tachometer from a W124 diesel so I now need to get the amplifier board and the crank sensor. Is it a difficult job to do? Mine is a manual btw.
