I have seen it mentioned in a few places to use fuse slot position 71 (15a) when installing a reversing camera. However, it says there is a specific reversing camera fuse slot at position 83 (7.5a) Why wouldn't you use that?

Answered it myself: "I've read others who tap into the reverse camera wire but I've read about too many issues of unstable power or flickering screens with this method"

You need an ignition supply with an aftermarket camera (or a reverse light feed unless the SAM modulates that, which it certainly does on a SLK but may not do on a W204). The factory camera gets power all the time so F83 likely to be permanently positive, whereas I'd guess at F71 being a cigarette lighter. You need to add a 5A or less fuse for an aftermarket camera (look how thin the wires are ...). R

On the W164, the camera fuse is Fuse 37, and it is indeed a permanent live. I've just fitted a wireless reversing camera, which I didn't want to leave permanently on anyway. I fitted a relay into the F37 12v supply, triggered from the reversing light circuit, and have no problems with unstable power or flickering screens (caused by the bulb failure sensor feature detecting an 'extra' power drain from the camera on the reversing light circuit and turning it off).
