I have a 3 yr old C180 Estate and when I reverse up a slight incline (driveway) it will roll forward if I do not have my foot on the break or on the accelorator. Does anyone know what the problem is. It has only just started to happen.

Also assuming it's an automatic see if it still does it in C mode rather than S.

Reversing on an incline

Thank you - it is an automatic. I will check the fluid levels - wouldn't the on board computor highlight low levels?
I will check C mode - what would the difference be?

Is it supposed to hold in place, or are we just talking about "creep" holding it?

Mine will also roll forward on steep inclines in reverse. Have the same engine (assuming its K) and gearbox. Occassionally the incline is too steep for creep to hold it at idling revs. I've never been in an auto that will hold a car on steep inclines with creep.

You sure it did it before? Is it not holding it at all now whereas before it was up to a point?

Thanks - My wife drives the car much more than me but I am positive that it has never before started to slip down the drive as much as I did yesterday evening. It may have done it slightly but not to me recollection. I will check with her now.

Now try it in C mode, you might find that it always holds it.

If all else fails just have the idle increased the next time the car is serviced by 25 RPM that will solve it

How will as little as 25rpm solve it malcolm?

Mine idles at 600rpm is this normal?

No that is too low, it should be at least 650

My own SL rolls back on my driveway, 25 increase in RPM stops that.

Sit in the car on a hill and do a test using the rev counter

It makes sense malcolm as it sometime sounds like it may stall when the power steering is on full!

Thanks Shude but I hate C mode, car feels a little lazy off the line as it is (throttle response) starting in second gear would be even worse!

My CLK has just started the auto gearbox creep on inclines in reverse. Where do you check the fluid level? The handbook says it is a dealer job and shows nothing?

I guess the extra 25rpm will help, how do you adjust that?

The ATF tube is covered by a black cap with red tear-away seal, and there's no dipstick. Hence 'delear only'. If you want to check the ATF yourself you will need to buy a dipstick and break the red seal to remove the cap (new seal is only a pound or so from the dealer).

The idle rev speed is controlled by the ECU so probably/presumably prgoramable via MB STAR, which is the official MB diagnostic tool, so again delear (oe specialist) only.

I had a similar problem in Spain 4 years ago. Not occurred again since a new MAF was installed.

How much does it cost to replace the MAF.

That could be my creep problem on an incline, that or adjust idle by 25rpm

Hi
I have a 1999 sl320
My car will roll forward reversing up an incline until I touch the accelerator and the electrical signal tells the gearbox to hold the car from rolling forward. I don't have to keep my foot on it, just tip it with my foot.
I have a 722.6 gearbox.
Is that any help

Isn't that what the handbrake is for?
