Reversing on an incline - Problems

Hi
I have a 1999 sl320
My car will roll forward reversing up an incline until I touch the accelerator and the electrical signal tells the gearbox to hold the car from rolling forward. I don't have to keep my foot on it, just tip it with my foot.
I have a 722.6 gearbox.
Is that any help

Garage say transmission fluid low (and dirty) so could do with a change (probably never done).

However their automatic transmission specialist say that is not likely to be cause of the creep on relatively steep slopes.

One strange part of the problem is reversing up a steep slope when the rear wheel (I think just one) starts spinning and the car just won't reverse, just spins up.

It did not do this before and it is very disconcerting.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

I would do the fluid change and see what happens afterwards.

Is your traction control system working?

Yes, I guess the gearbox is worth looking after. After that the rev adjustment?

Could it be that a dirty MAF sensor can slow the revs down enough to make the gearbox holding on an incline become a problem?

No idea on the traction control. No warning messages saying it isn't working. How else to find out?

well if you were spinning the rear wheels I would expect the traction control to kick in and light up your dash and control the spin.

Depending on your right foot this could be quite normal for one wheel to spin when reversing up a steep incline. I would however expect the traction control to kick in.

Automatic transmission fluid and filter now changed!!

Problem with creep on steep hills still just the same!!! Both in reverse and forward.

Garage (decent Merc specialist) who did the fluid change have no answer for it.

Not sure if the traction control is working or not, no warnings on the dash and nothing else strange to report (apart from the wheel spinning up in reverse on a steep and muddy track)

Not sure what to do now.

Have you checked the gearbox electrical plug and seal ?

Just changed mine. Full of oil. Causing problems with the box. Might be your problem, especially if your on an incline. The oil might be shorting the electrical pins

Garage charged £25 for new seal/plug, so I presume that is not the problem.

Just a thought.......
