Just a quick one,

About to order a TV for the dining room,

Which retailers warranty/service is best? Richer sounds offer 6 years but is it a hassle if a replacement is needed? John Lewis only offer 5 year but I’ve dealt with them before and they’ve been good. It will be an OLED so would like a good warranty to back it up.

Both are the same price.

Cheers

My experience JL every time. Tried RS and they never have stock or the price has changed. JL match the price and take out a credit deal for 6 months interest free.

I bought an LG 55" OLED (B7V) back in March.

I went with Richer Sounds as I've used them since the early 90s (various branches around the country) and I've never had an issue and also because of the 6 year warranty.

I even more recently bought a Sony 32" LED but discovered it didn't have a timer which we use so I saved the hassle of taking it back and took it to my local store.

I know I am within my rights anyway but no quibble and they even opened up 25 minutes early for me (09:30 was the opening time that morning) to save me standing around.

I'd happily buy a TV from JL but the extra warranty from RS and I managed to get a £100 off voucher for RS swung it.

Costco also did 5 yrs and were 2/3 the price of everyone else when I bought a number of years ago .

Always pays to shop around .

John Lewis if you want quality service from delivery to claim. Richer Sounds is what it is: a discount specialist.

But, that said, the essence of warranty is that it's all in your head. Modern TV's are so reliable that it's unlikely to go wrong, and if it does, you'll have forgotten that you have the warranty.

My LG OLED is three years old now and shows not a hint of problem. It replaced two 50 inch Plasmas that lasted 5 years apiece, only being replaced because of the desire to upgrade.

My 7000 series Samsung was bought around 9 years ago when my son was just starting to walk : the 36” CRT TV we had at the time would teeter on its stand when he leant against it , and we had visions of the 100Kg monster falling on him .

Looking round various places , it became apparent that LED backlit was the way to go , liked the Samsung 7000 series at that time ; I wanted a 50” and her ladyship said 42” so we compromised on 46” .

Most places wanted around £2200 for it ; only JL and Costc offered 5 year warranties, but Costco were selling it at £1500 , which was a substantial saving and well worth the £30 joining fee to take advantage.

I don’t keep membership all the time but if planning a large purchase it can be worth joining .

Toying with updating sometime and giving Harris the Samsung for his bedroom to use with the. X box ; now looking at the Sony Vieras with acoustic surface as a replacement; had Sony for decades before and only went with Samsung last time round .

Probably a useless comment, but I've purchased from both JL and RS and have been happy. Not needed to use their warranties.

I think I’ve only ever bought one thing from Richer Sounds and that had to be repaired during the manufacturers warranty. It surprised me that Richer Sounds themselves performed the repair. Dropped off and collected through their local store. No fuss, all very straightforward.

I’ve never had anything repaired through John Lewis, but we’ve had a kettle replaced without quibble. There was something else, I forget what, which was a month or so out of the manufacturers warranty when it failed, and John Lewis very clear that they weren’t interested in helping.

We’ve bought our large electrical items through John Lewis for quite a while now, due to the extended warranty and their reputation for dealings without quibble.

I'd be happy just finding the TV I want. Looking to replace a 32" in the kitchen with a 39" but they don't seem to exist any longer with most manufacturers the next size up is 43" which simply won't fit. John Lewis had only two 40" TV's to choose from which is still a touch too big and I doubt that size will be available much longer.

Did you not check out what they’ve got at the Argos warehouse in Corby? There’s some deals to be had there

Used both for many years and will continue to do so. Had seperate problems with a TV then a TV stand from RSounds, contacted them and the replacements received the next day. Excellent service in my opinion

I’ve never used JL but I have used RS many times
Got a 60” Panasonic a few years ago for £1k on offer
If reset itself once so I gave them a call
They sent a guy out to check it and found a fault so said they were replacing it
By that time they didn’t do the 60” anymore so I got the latest 65” worth £3.5k delivered
Can’t fault the service

You say that but my house was hit by lightning and it knocked out, amongst other things, my TV. I buy loads from RS and never take out a warranty but the salesman advised me that if I was to only warranty one thing it should be the TV as so much is packed into them these days.

So I did. Four years later and boom! I dropped it off, they gave me a loaner, they fixed it and I went back to swap them over. It was all very easy.

Fair point re the lightning strike.

I had one myself a decade ago, but my house insurance picked up the whole bill for all the kit....

It's a bit creative to call it a warranty claim...

Well chaps...

I ended up getting it from AO.com through their Ebay store using the £75 off code posted by @bob6600

Only get 2 year warranty but that’s a good excuse to get a newer one later... man maths..;)

Thanks for all your help :)
