Folks

I have been using one of these on my Pajero as it is stored up for the summer.

Now my battery is kaput. It shows 12.9 vdc but goes flat in about 10 seconds when I try and start the car. I suspect that I have knackered plates.

Does anybody know if the charger could have led to the demise of my battery? Is it just coincidence that it gave up within a few weeks of plugging in the charger?

Putting a meter accross the terminals when on charge shows the charger putting out 13.2 VDC. The book says the charger is pushing about 1.5 amps when charging.

Hard to say Bruce. If the charger is ok, no it wouldn't cause the battery to fail. If it is faulty it definitely could.
I'm not sure, but I think that the float voltage for a lead acid battery is around 13.2 volts. Significantly above this could cause the battery to gas and lose electrolyte over a period of time.
My guess is that the battery has just reached the end of its life.
When you get another, if you leave the charger on, just check the voltage regularly and wnsure it doesn't get above nominal float voltage.
