We became rather blase about space travel in the era of the space shuttle and the international space station. We tend to forget the original space race took place during the cold war where space was seen as the vital new frontier. Russia had stolen the lead from the Americans with Yuri Gargarin due to the genius of Sergei Korolev so America had to respond. Their rocketry was driven by German scientists who had developed the V2 missiles ---specifically Wernher Von Braun who was in charge . Thus the space race took on immense strategic political significance and this was the atmosphere the first flights took place in.
I always recommend at this point that people should read Tom Wolfe's book THE RIGHT STUFF [ forget the movie] to get a feel for the time this took place. RIP John Glen a true hero of the 20th century.

Yes - apparently. Antarctica has the highest average elevation of all the Continents I think. Ed Hillary had the same problem in Nepal, and had to be lowered very quickly indeed.
