Err I 've just paid £215 to put a years rent on my car (SLK32AMG). It's C02 is a whopping 268 G/KM

This price seems very reasonable to me as I was expecting something nearer £400 odd quid to pay for a years road tax. or have I missed something here :dk: The CLK 350 for example was £400

Think it depend on the manufacture date, not registration date. My E55 was registered at the end of March 2001 and produces 293 G/KM and road tax was £210 back in December 08.

It's based on date of registration and there are two cut off dates: 1 Mar 01 and 26 Mar 06. Emissions don't count on cars registered before Mar 01, it is a flat rate.

There is no answer to the question about the cars, registered before the 2001.

And exactly, I'm interested in w202 C180 and C200 engines.
Found an answer about C180, but tried the search, and no luck with C200 engine :(

I've just put 12 months on my 1998 W202 C230k and it was £190, as expected and as listed on the website linked by renault12ts! :)

Reading down towards the bottom there is a heading 'Trade Licences' , and 'all vehicles' were listed as £166 , or so .

For someone with a collection of a few cars , it might be cheaper to 'become' a trader and run around with one's trade plates on whichever car you fancy - since the plates can be swapped around at will !

Or are there further hidden costs involved ?

Someone 'in the trade' please enlighten ?

Good idea but wouldn't do the styling of your beloved MB much good!

Well, thanks for that, Now I know the margins between the c180 and c230k :) And Now I only need to decide which one I want to get :)

offtop: I am thinking of 96 w202 180 manual, or 97 200-230k auto.

When did they introduce the K* changes allowing all large engined cars registered before March 2006 to pay cheaper VED?

Up until now I thought March 2001 was the cut off date...

Am I right in thinking a pre March 2006 car of any emissions over 225 will only have to pay £215?

A few months ago, the gov did a U turn and capped cars between 2001 and 2006 to K*.

Don't hold your breath though, they could just as easy take away K* at the next budget........

Edit: here you go, note the line:

However, it is now understood that the increases for cars bought after 2001 and before 2006 are to be delayed for at least a year by Alistair Darling, the Chancellor.

The C180 and C230k will cost exactly the same for road tax as the threshold is at 1.6 litres engine capacity, which both cars exceed. I don't know how rogkildare managed to get £5 discount but £190 is correct from May 1st 2009.

So if this is likely to be reversed at any time then the situation is even more confusing?

Well, a friend of mine has W reg Vauxhall Vectra 2.5 V6, and he's paying 185 as well. So I think It just depends on the place, where the Tax Disc was issued.

I renewed mine this month online and paid £190 for a '98 E280 2.8. I understand this will rise next year to the maximum of £215.

Of course it does not depend on where the disc was issued. Look at the link posted above. There are a lot of bands granted but it is easy to see what you pay. All pre March 2001 cars pay a flat rate at one of two levels depending on whether they are below or above 1549 cc.
After MArch 2001 the road tex depends on the CO emission level. Between March 2001 and March 2006 the max band is 225g CO currently £215 pa (or thereabouts); for cars registered after March 2006 there are two more bands beyond 225g and these bands take the annual road tax up to about £440 max.
The point has already been made that these bands and which cars fit where can be fiddled around with every year.
If you want a big engined car and want to avoid very high tax then buy one registered before March 2001 - not 100% certain but it is less of a likely future target.......:(

I just bought a 2000 Land Rover Discovery on account of the road tax changes. I could have afforded a newer models but don't trust post-2001 motoring taxation. The UK government is spent, overdrawn, indebted, overgeared, uncreditworthy, etc.... I'm not contributing £400+ in future when an older car is as good (or can be made as good) as a newer model. It will earn the chancellor >£1000k p.a. in fuel duty & VAT alone however.
