In my previous car, W201 - 190E, and my father's W124, the cars would never roll backwards on a hill no matter how steep the incline. Both cars are fitted with the 4 speed hydraulic/mechanical automatic gearboxes (with the E/S switch).

It always bugged me that my current motor does roll backwards on significantly steep hills. However, I remember reading recently (but I forget where) that the electronic 5 speed auto boxes do roll back when switched to 'S' but will not roll if switched to 'W'.

I gave it a try today... low and behold as soon as I selected 'W' the car stopped creeping backwards when in Drive and kept its station on a really steep hill.

Anyone know the reasoning behind this little quirk or is it another case of

I tried it for the first time on saturday, I was on a steep hill (in a car park in Calais) and thought I'd test it out. It does seem strange, why does second gear stop it rolling back?
