Router "Times out"?

Good evening...

Ever since I installed a Belkin Router, I have had real problems with video downloads (you tube).

The bar shows the clip is downloading, it strarts to play but I never get anywhere near the full clip - usually just upto a minute.

My guess is that the router has "timed out"? (I have not idea what that means...!) but I never get any error message, it just wont download more than a minutes worth or so.

Is there a setting I need to change?

Cheers!!!

Better still, get rid of the Belkin and get something like a Linksys.

Belkins are really awful routers !

Frying pan and fire.

Also, if you're on ADSL, try reducing the MTU size (it'll be in the settings somewhere). The belkin is probably set to 1500 or 1496, try 1452 instead and see if that helps.

MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit, and is the maximum amount of user data that a device will put in a single packet. Some routers have issues with the full ADSL MTU of 1496, and lower MTUs sometimes help on busy DSLAMs (the piece of equipment that terminates ADSL links in the phone exchanges), but can lower the maximum download rate slightly as the ratio of user data to protocol data (i.e. headers) gets changed.

Is it a new router or second hand?

What settings have been changed from default?

Do you get the same symptoms on other PC's attached to the same router?

Have used the same Belkin for 3 years now without any problems. Use a Powerbook, G5 desktop and also a HP laptop and works fine. Did try a Linksys and returned it within a few days because it kept losing the connection.
Having read this post I have just updated the firmware.
Thanks for that Bolide:)

Can you qualify this statement?

Well, Ive had two Belkins, and I know other people that have used them and I had several problems including VPN tunneling problems, locking up, etc.

They also don't do the wireless speeds that they claim to do. I did several tests on the ones that I owned and found them to be far from satisfactory speed wise, and when I contacted their technical support, they finally came around to admitting to me at the time that the router did not do what it said on the box.

I wouldn't say the Linksys has been brilliant but its certainly performed better than the Belkin.

Had no problems with my Belkin router at all (been using it 2 years).
