Rowan's 500e

Yes he owns it...but only for a few years after it was imported from Japan. Imagine if his name meant anything...he could buy and sell cars at will adding a premium for the small time he owns them.

Wonder why Mr. Rowan couldn't afford the full leather interior on his both 500's? :(

An E500/500E should have had full leather interior as a factory standard otherwise it looked a bit cheap with semi leather/cloth seats.
The 500 was the best and should have had the very best exclusive factory options delivered, sadly it didn't! :(

...'cause he imported it from Japan? He didn't spec it.

The leather on the Recaro options seat is very stiff. The pre facelift w201 2.3 16v came with half leather as standard and full leather as a option (same seats as the 500e). Many people preferred the half leather as the cloth is more comfortable on a sporty ride. It's not necessarily a skinflint option just personal choice.

Back then, even on posh cars you had the choice of leather or something else, and I seem to recall that velour was a cost option on the S-class in the 1970s, because it was seen to be a luxury - I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will confirm.

Now though, posh cars are much more limited - there may be a choice of leathers, but there’s very very rarely a non-leather option. I would be chuffed to bits if you could get a sporty V8 Mercedes without full leather.

My old Beemer 525 had full grey cloth interior. Warm in winter and cold in summer. No sliding around in corners. Sold it at 90k miles and it was still very acceptable; at least as good as leather.

I've always preferred cloth to leather but the best seats are not normally available in cloth.

I'm pretty sure I read that in olden days, leather was up front to be kept clean by the coach driver and the cloth was the premium option in the back... which has somehow translated into leather being premium.

I had a 1985 525e with the same... probably similar seats if you are talking E28 vintage.

Mine was 1997.

The GT has a mix of real leather/real Alcantara/dinamica microfibre and whilst it looks, smells and feels plush and bang on luxurious, on sports cars where you 'sweat' a little I feel this retains a little too much DNA....

Golf GTI with the plaid/tartan sports seats has to be the sweet spot.

Velour was a beautiful option for such W116 cars like the 450SEL 6.9 :)
Don't remember what the 6.9 car in Ronin had?
However it was a very nice car.
Many F1 drivers back in the days drove the 6.9 which was a testament for fast and luxury car :):)

Me would like to have such a classic instead of the most new problematic w@nkers that Mercedes nowadays spits out from the factory .
