hi

all around the underneath of my R107 there are rubber bungs that are pushed into the bottom of box sections and all along the sills.

Many of these are/were coated with underseal. I am undersealing the whole car and would like to know whether to:

1. cover them with underseal

or

2. underseal and then re-plug the rubber bungs

should i renew the rubber bungs if they appear OK?

i'm a bit confused to their purpose - should they allow water to drain out? they are solid unlike ones in the sills of my W124.

cheers

derek

I should imagine they are to keep the worst of the weather out, so long as there are some water drain about i would just remove check for rust refit and cover with underseal.

Dont forget the mb seal will be a lot better quality than the stuff from waxoyl etc and remains flexible a lot longer, trick told to me by my father in law was to mix grease with the underseal and he said it was still soft and sticking to the metalwork years later, whilst remaining dry on the outside.

take all the bungs out and have a peer in there with a torch to see if it is rusty. Then fill them up with waxoyl or similar on a hot day; put the bungs back in and take the car for a drive to get the liquidy runny wax to coat all of the insides. I would do the underside with waxoyl rather than underseal; it stays flexible and you can keep "topping it up" every few years.

i know the condition of the inside because i cut away the whole of the end of the sill as it was rotted through!!

i'm using "hammerite underseal with waxoyl" paint on stuff. and normal spray waxoyl for the inner sills.

according to Druk, there is supposed to be a channel for the water to run out of but this has been welded over in a past repair.

i plan to create several small drain holes along the sill and block up the top entrance to the sill to avoid unnecessary water ingress.
