so my local chandler has one of those vacuum devices to suck oil out of the dipstick tube.
I also note that they have a rubber strap wrench, this looks a bit kinder to the plastic filter canister than a chain wrench, has anyone used one of these?

any thoughts?

Not seen a rubber one though strap webbing ones are common and shouldn't mark anything.

The Boa Constrictor is quite good-- BUT can slip on a greasy surface and uses that triangular serrated edge "sticky out bit " as a fulcrum to apply leverage - this could bend/crack a thin metal can/plastic housing depending on how much torque was applied. Since access in the "horizontal plane" round the oil filter is often limited I reckon the big socket from Halfords is a better bet.

big socket much much easier and maybe as cheap. i got one from halfords for £4.00 a lot cheaper than a new canister.

cheers chaps, had a look at the boa constrictor, but had to go to halfords anyway so picked up the socket.
