For cars over 10 years old because of pollution. Just heard it on the local radio so don't know any more.

Music to my ears, nice bit of weasel scrapping ;)

My understanding from listening to the Today program on R4 this morning is that various bodies/committees are suggesting that a scrapage scheme be considered for diesel cars over 10 years old, as long as the replacement vehicle is electric or electric hybrid.

That is a long way from a rumour that there will be a scrapage scheme.

I must admit that I have to smile at the cul-de-sac Euro politicians have driven up (pun intended) in their rush to meet CO2 emissions targets that are themselves of questionable worth.

That's disappointing, as much as I hate weasels I could not inflict some electric / hybrid thingy on the owners.

I hope not. I just bought into the diesel over 10s market!

Diesel is the fuel of gods and men. Petrol is for pussies.

I hadn't had a Diesel vehicle for years. Last time was a non-turbo Ford Escort Van. 0-60 was in the region of... well, it was best to find a downhill stretch...

The 2.0 turbo diesel in my BMW X1 is a delight - smooth, quiet, loads of acceleration, and still over 40mpg. I wasn't specifically looking for a diesel engine - but they don't do petrol versions in the UK.

I'm certainly happy with it... just as long as I keep remembering to wear plastic gloves at the filling station...

I just missed the chance to bail out of my car into a very cheap 2yr lease on something else and am kicking myself for not going for it.

I think the tide is going to increasingly move against deisel's and 2yrs might be time for the position to become clearer.

Unfortunately I have heard the same. New large engine vehicles and diesel cars will be under scrutiny. All you need to do is look at the road tax charging scheme to see their extra targets. I am hoping they don't just keep doubling the road tax for the older vehicles just to get them off of the road.

 In anything less than an uber Audi., or BMW M-series, or AMG, petrol makes no sense. These days 0-60s are the same with quick change auto boxes and diesel torque means wins in the midrange every time.

2015 BMW 435d 0-60 mph 4.7

2016 BMW 435i 0-60 mph 4.9

:p

As a cyclist and motorbike rider I hate diesels the air quality they leave in their wake is terrible, and from motorbike point of view traces of diesel on the road is not a pleasant experience!

Although I have to say the very newest models seem pretty clean but no idea how that will be a few years down the road

Diesel Diesel Diesel.... fuel of the Gods !

What about a C63d ?

I agree, older diesels are nasty to be behind however with newer diesel tech (EGR, DPF, AdBlue) far less comes out of the diesel car into the air and they are more efficient too. Not quite puffing butterflies and unicorns, but getting there, especially with the hybrid diesels.

My belief is that, rightly or wrongly, there is definitely a head of legislative steam building up that will lead to either diesel vehicles en masse, or subsections of the diesel vehicle population, becoming the new pariah. I suspect that anything without NOx reduction measures (AdBlue or equivalent) on it will be the first target.

There's a LOT of diesel vehicles on the roads of all kinds though. It might be political suicide to targer them.

I can't help thinking it would be far more sensible for the government to progressively make the emissions limits for new cars of ALL kinds more stringent, in conjunction with devising a much more realistic emissions test.

But would the exhaust sound as musical?

I don't really understand the posters who are unpleasant about one fuel or another, it's completely illogical.

My take:

Big engined diesels are great for covering big miles.

Big engined petrols are great for fun.

In between, petrol/hybrid/electric/cow dung who cares as long as it's not diesel.

Oh and it's scrappage.

Whenever did "sensible" come into it? You're talking about green matters here, you know ;)

The issue is that, egged on by the environ-mental lobby, our politicians have signed up to legally binding pollution targets. One of those targets is for NOx, and that target is regularly being breached in many UK towns and cities today. Public enemy number one for NOx emissions is... (drum roll) diesel-engined vehicles, and in particular those without exhaust after treatment.

The environ-mentalists don't care that pretty much everything they buy has been transported on a diesel-engined vehicle somewhere along the line, and that without them life could become very uncomfortable, very quickly. NOx targets must be met, and hang the consequences!
